Vibe AUTO gears down when braking on steep hill. Normal??

My 2006 Vibe AUTO gears down when braking on steep hill. The rpms jump a few hundred and you can feel the car making the extra gear down. I used to do this when I had manual cars - never on an automatic.

Here's the REALLY weird part - I recently changed motor mounts (which i believe are defective - car still vibrating a lot and will be redoing them soon) and the the gearing down on steep hills only started AFTER the motor mounts were replaced.

Is this normal? Could the motor mounts be affecting things? (only 2 top mounts were changed).

Thanks!

I've owned both generations of the Vibe. It is totally normal.

I think the "steep hill" is coincidence.
The part of the 'puter that controls the trans/throttle/speed seems to have an odd calibration that is not apparent is other cars I have driven. The programming must have been delegated to the new kid. The one that his mother drove him to/from work since he was too young for a permit but was a programming genius.

My 05 4WD Trix does the same thing but only after I touch the brake going down a hill. It always has done that.

My 2009 GT does this too.

My car does it too. It's normal. Kind of cool.

That said, the transmission programming is totally whack. Trying to maintain 65 mph on a slight incline on the interstate is impossible unless I drop it to 3rd gear manually.
