Clunking noise when braking

I have a 2009 Vibe GT. For the last 6 months or so, I have noticed a distinct "clunking" noise when I brake. I can also feel a little vibration in the brake pedal.

Doesn't happen ever time, and the brakes have been checked and cleared by the dealership.

The dealership mechanic (who is probably a hack), was unable to figure out what the issue was. He thought maybe transmission slipping as the car downshifts (it is an automatic).

I am concerned about this as a potential safety issue or a high-dollar repair.

Anyone have any ideas?

Where is the noise coming from? Wheels? Engine Bay?

Next time you're up to speed, place the car in neutral and start braking until completely stopped. This will rule out any downshifting in the tranny. FYI, no such issues with either of our 2009 Vibe GT's. Juniors just has the annoying steering column noise. Everything else is fine :D

Could be a ton of things. Ball joint, strut, brake caliper, loose brake pad, engine mount, tranny mount, loose heat shield, loose exhaust pipe.
