If the image doesn't work, go to Mercedes web site, to sport utility vehicles and check out the vehicle that has a starting price of $72,500, what do you think? I saw one the other day and I was NOT impressed any other comments? The guy driving the Mercedes sure looked at my Vibe! Little does he know he spent way too much for that 'box' of ugly...the picture didn't work, try this link... http://carpoint.msn.com/vip/newoverview ... el=G-Class [Modified by mrfrog, 3:08 AM 8/14/2002]

It kind of reminds me of the Volkswagon Thing that was out about 27 or so years ago. It was a boxy jeep looking thing that you could remove the doors and roof. Fugly!

Have you seen the Honda Element yet? Similar looking to this Mercedes, and in the price class of the Vibe.

If there were no ugly cars no one would have any standards to measure the sweet ones.Every once in a while there are ugly cars (pacer), most are just boring, (Accord).

Sorry I thought only the Pacer's mom could love it. I always assumed it was ok to trash the Pacer. Maybe I should use the Trabant as my example of a lemon design. Any other suggestions?

Citroen's were real winners. In my humble opinion the Citroen 2CV was the "ugly duckling" of the bunch. If you think Citroen stylists did a nice job of the 2cv have a look at this van Hot stuff!More: http://web.ukonline.co.uk/Members/jr.ma ... other.html

Have you guys heard about the new mercedes that they have out (limited but it's supposedly out). It costs 300,000 dollars. It has electronically reclining seats and champagne glass holders instead of cup holders. Now that's sickening

The car that you guys are drooling over is the Maybach. Story at http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/tw/maybach.htm I would rather a C series AMG and spend the rest on my house ( or buy a 2nd one )

That is the Mercedes "G-Wagon". (G stands for "Gelaendewagen" - In German "Gelände" means terrain, also difficult terrain. "Wagen" stands for wagon or vehicle. So Mercedes-Benz Gelaendewagen ) Its basically the "Street version" of a UniMog. Its known around the world as (probably) one of the best off-road beasts you can buy. The reason for its "box like" look is probably to stick with tradition. History of G-wagon:http://4x4abc.com/G-Class/history.htmlMilitary uses them:http://www.army-technology.com/contract ... r5.htmlThe Unimog:http://www.unimogmagazine.com/Mercedes was a pioneer in the off-road and 4x4 world. I believe they were the first to use locking differentials and they were the first to develop a center differential (key components in AWD and 4WD systems). Show some respect to the G-wagon. It is off-road royalty and shouldn't be compared to "common everyday" opinions of what looks good or not. Its not build to "look good", its built to climb mountains and cross rivers. (too bad so many rich yuppies are buying them to shuttle the kids to soccer practice and hit the malls.)The G-wagon is probably the "German version" of the Hummer. I wonder how many think that the Hummer is ugly? Like I said, its not built for looks.

Hmmm, a Mercedes fan. Hate to say this, but "capable" doesn't have to drag along "ugly" to form a complete package. Regarding the Unimog, is it not about double the size and two and a half times the weight of the G-Wagon? Would a similar comparison be calling the S-10 pickup the "street version" of the original Hummer? Hey, they're both sold by GM.

You could say that an s-10 is a street version of a hummer IF the S-10 came with similar drivetrain components of a hummer. (locking diffs, tire pressure monitors, etc) I am not comparing size and weight, I am comparing mechanical components. From a design standpoint, the mog and g-wagon have some things in common (just my assumption). The Hummer wasn't even originally designed by GM so I doubt it shares many design points with the S-10. (maybe the H2 would be a better pair with S-10 since the H2 is at least based on a GM product.)The unimog and g-wagon have much more incommon with each other than a Hummer and an S-10 ~ Poor comparison.

AM General was the original designer of the original Hummer. They worked hand in hand with GM from the start of the project. I'm not sure, but I believe that the first mass produced Hummers were made in a GM plant. And I also believe that they have always used a GM engine (Chevy 350 ci 5.7L V8, diesel used the same block, just was converted for diesel). GM bought out AM General and purchased all liscensing and naming rights and now they are producing the Hummer line of vehicles.

The $70,000 for the G-wagon is only for the U.S. version. The European version is much more expensive. The U.S. version is a "stripped down" version. The G-wagon was considered the ultimate AWD vehicle. It was not until AM General's Hummer, that the G-wagon had any actual competiton. AM General is one of the U.S. govt. vendors for military vehicles. The produce the Hummer amongst other vehicles. Am General entered into an agreement with GM to produce a civilian, streetable and affordable version of the original Hummer. Am General told GM that certain criteria must be met if they were going to produce the H2. Entry and departure angles were agreed upon among other things. There was much mistaken press that stated GM was actually buying Am General but that actually never happened. Am General is still very much alive and well. The other Mercedes vehicle that costs $300,000 (actually $350,000 or more) is named "Maybach". The Maybach is Mercedes attempt to develop an Ultra expensive line to compete with BMW's Rolls Royce and VW's Bentley. Maybach is to Mercedes as Lexus is to Toyota. Mercedes is trying hard NOT to call the Maybach a Mercedes but rather a new car line of it own. For $70,000 I am not sure I would get a G-wagon. I think there is too much competition in this area now and most of them look better than the G-wagon.
