Loose Sun Visor Elastic

Hey folks- this is mostly a brainstorm, unless someone has a killer solution to this problem.

My 2006 Vibe has outlived the elasticity of the bands that go around the sun visors to hold stuff. The elastic is now saggy and dry-rotted to the point where it's dropping little flakes of rubber all over the seats any time the visors are pulled down. I'm considering taking an exacto knife and extracting the failing elastic bands.

#1) Is this the best way to remove these things?

#2) Should I wish to replace the functionality that these once served, any suggestions on what to use to accomplish the same thing?

Thanks in advance!

I just cut mine off. I really don't remember what I did, I imagine that an exacto knife near the seams will do the trick, though. You'll feel much better with those ugly bands gone, trust me!

Oh, and I never replaced mine. Once they're that loose, you'll probably have stopped using them. Maybe you could find nylon straps and glue velcro to the ends, then hide the velcro parts on the top part of the visors. That won't stretch, but if you use the strap for just the garage opener or glasses, you probably won't need the elastic anyway.

I have to admit that I just clip things directly onto the visor now.
