Replacing a leaky sunroof seal ???

Post by bigtom »

Sorry I posted this in three different spots.(not sure where to post this)I have a 2004 vibe and can see light on the drivers side front corner of the sunroof. I poured a glass of water on it and it poured inside the car at a pretty strong rate(just on that front corner) I called the dealership(GM) to order a new seal. They wanted 236.00 for the seal. I called the Toyota dealership and I ordered it for under 40.00(WOW what a difference) Anyway I am not sure how to install the seal, any help out there would be great. I just bought it 3 days ago and realized it had been leaking for some time,(the metal under the seats has surface rust on them and the car smells like a wet dog) I have vacuumed it out and deodorized it and put a dehumidifier in it for 2 days now its time to fix the leak. Like I said any help or pics on replacing this seal would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how to replace the seal, but I do know that all the sunroofs leak, the seal is not ever really going to be watertight. It sound s like a bigger issue for your car may be clogged drains. Part of the sunroof assembly is a drip tray to catch what comes through, and a drain in each corner. Almost always water leaking into the car from the sunroof can be addressed by cleaning out the drains. On both my Vibe and my son's Matrix, water leaking into the car from the sunroof was eliminated by cleaning the drains.

The two front drains can be see by sliding the sunroof open all the way and look for a small hole along the front edge of the tray at the corners. The other end of the drain hose connected to these is not accessible, but you can look for stuff blocking the tray drain holes, or snake a wire down each to try to clean them out.

The two rear drains are not easy to get to from the top, might be visible by tilting the glass open, but I haven't tried. The hoses connected to these exit under the car behind the rear wheels, you could either snake them out from the bottom with a wire, or use compressed air to blow them out.
