Shaved badges...goo gone...big problem

Well, I shaved my badges on Friday and used some Goo Gone to take off any extra stickyness off my doors. Unfortunately...it has severly affected my paint!!!My paint has turned cloudy in the area where the Goo Gone was rubbed...does ANYONE have any idea what I should do? I Zainoed the Vibe hoping that would take care of the problem-but it didn't. I am so disgusted...I don't know what to do! I used Goo Gone when taking the badges off my boyfriends Grand Am last year, and his paint was fine... but, of course, mine gets all f'ed up.

CaCathy13 sorry to hear that. It's just in the clear coat correct?

Sorry to hear that Cathy. You may have to use a gentle rubbing compound. I'm not sure what else you could do.

Yes...I have already washed the area (the obvious first choice) and used the Zaino Z-5 and Z-2 polish on it...with no improvement. Mike suggested using a polishing compound, but that idea scares me...as I'm a complete novice at any of that and if Mike messed up, I'd be in jail for murder...After I used the goo gone I clayed the area and did wash it... I'm thinking of trying Dawn to maybe cut through the Zaino and maybe the cloudiness...I'm hoping it's just maybe some oiliness.....

try the meguiars clay. I had a gas/oil mixture in the paint on my camaro that wouldnt come out with ANYTHING. This stuff took it right out.

Yeah or the miror glaize too, them polish after it drys. I'd try this b4 the rubbing compound. fyi: I used the old fishing line trick to remove mine, then used orange clean (same as goo gone) for the small spot, but I didb't have any problems (matbe cuz mines white?)

I have been shaving badges off of many different kinds of cars for the past year now. I like to use a sticker remover called UN-DO it works great and does not hurt the paint. Also you should really put a good wax job to the area to help with discoloration right after you remove the badges. If I can help you with anythin in more detail let me know.

The obvious inferiority of the paint on VIBES is definitely the problem here, not the goo gone or anything you did. The clear coat and paint are way too thin and too soft. Unfortunately, you cannot complain to the dealer for a warranty claim on this one. It might be worth a shot though. I just used a whole bottle of goo gone on the front end of my 8 year old truck to remove the goo after heating and scraping off the clear vinyl protectant . No problem whatsoever. NUMMI, we have a problem.

I also used UN-DO to assist in badge removal. It worked fine for me. See pics if you like.

I always use WD-40. it works great taking off the sticky stuff. Also, if you take a blow dryer and heat up the emblem/sticker before you take it off, it help peel right off with less mess to deal with afterwards.

I've already used goo gone on my neptune Vibe and my sister's 03 Corolla and had no problems. DON'T USE RUBBING COMPOUND!!!!! Get some polishing compound and your cloudy finish should rub out. Polishing compound is clearcoat safe and is available in most larger chain auto stores, and probably WalMart, too. It will go though and remove wax as well. Just re-wax when finshed.

I didn't have a problem wheN i used goo gone. Then again, I have satellite, so it's harder to see clouds in the paint...*shrug*

I'm happy to report that some de-hazing stuff was used and it's good as new! No need to any compounds...I'm a lot happier now!Only now I'm not sure I like the debadged look...

Just buy Grafxwerks badge overlays and install them directly to the car, not on a badge. This way you can relocate them if you want.

I have some extra GT overlays that I want to put somewhere...just not sure exactly where. Mike says I should leave off all the GT badges, for unsuspecting racers...he's sneaky I tell ya.

quote:Only now I'm not sure I like the debadged look... I wasn't really sure why you debadged the Vibe. I like the badges personally, and I really like what you can do with them with overlays. The yellow looked awesome on there Cathy. I changed some of mine to reflective white. You could get the badge replacement decals from GrafxWerks. Those look pretty good as well.

i ended up shaving all my badges too. i moved the TRD badges to where the vibe GT were on the sides and left the hatch completely blank. something about people not knowing what it is and staring. guess i just like the attention and the questions. any excuse to talk about my car.... i'm saving all the badges tho for other purposes later down the road. i think i'm going to use the pontiac arrow from the rear on my SS hood when it's installed. the more i htink about it, the more i want to dry and customize the air scoop so it looks like there's 2 grills and not just the one, more pontiac than chevy. we'll see how it goes. gotta get the hood in first.
