The fuel pump just went on my Vibe (at least that's what I'm told is the reason it's not starting. ). My bf was going to replace it, and I just had a few questions to ask for him, before he gets started (in the next couple days).

1. How hard is this job to do? He's an apprentice tech, so he knows a bit. Is it difficult to get at the fuel pump and replace it? He can work on it at work, so he'll have a lift and all his tools and whatnot.

2. Is it the same fuel pump as the Toyota Matrix of the same year? I called a local auto parts store, and for some reason the fuel pump for the Vibe was $4-600 (and was a whole assembly, not sure what that entails), and for the Matrix, it was just the pump and cost like $100. Any ideas what that's about?

From what I have seen on here, it is pretty easy compared to other vehicles. The fuel pump can be easily accessed by removing the bottom of the rear seat.

How many miles does your Vibe have on it? I can't believe the fuel pump would go out already.

The reason that we think that it\s the fuel pump is that the car would start and run for two seconds and then die. But then my bf's co worker banged on the fuel tank with a rubber mallet and the car started with no problem. He is more experienced than my bf and he diagnosed it as the fuel pump. Now it's not running again but banging on the tank doesn't help. So we figure that the fuel pump needs to be replaced.

It's an 09 and has 70,000 km and it only has the powertrain warranty now. That's why we don't want to take it to the dealership.

Follow up:

The fuel pump was replaced... but the car still won't run. It worked before for several days after tapping the fuel tank. So the fuel pump was replaced. but that didn't seem to fix the issue. You can turn the key but I guess the fuel isn't going through? Any suggestions?

One of the mechanics suggested that it was the timing chain because it sounded like there was no compression. But when you turning the car on, it's not a loud sound or anything, it just won't start the engine. There are no oil leaks, no problems with the radiator and no smells.
