Hello,

I have an '07 Vibe and I've never had a tune-up done on it.

How would I know if it needs one? I don't even know if an '09 needs one.

I do a lot of maintanence on it (trans flush, fuel service, etc. I even have the engine cleaned every two years. lol) but I've never had a tune-up done and I have no idea how to tell if I should have one done, since it's running perfectly. Haven't even had the back brakes done yet as its not needed.

Also...how long do the batteries last? Still on the original battery, but had to jump it twice in the past year. Unless the engine is on (even on accesories), I never listen to the stereo. I did this once and that was when I had to jump the car for the first time a few years ago.

I was actually about to post the same question. My dealer says there is no need unless the check engine light is on. I'm at almost 103,000 in my '09.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe unless your vehicle is running rough, your fuel mileage is dropping for no apparent reason, etc. a tune up is unneccesary.

Also, what exactly would a "tune-up" constitute if it were necessary? I assume it would be replacement or adjustment that the computer does not automatically check and, if bad or out of specifications, would not necessarily set off the check engine light.

Tune up is an outdated term. It used to mean replace spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter.

Now, iridium plugs last 100K+ miles instead of 30K like the copper plugs of the past. With ignition coils there are no wires/distributor to replace and the fuel filter 'should' be good for the life of the car .

Surely you need to replace plugs "routinely" at some point. Other than that I would agree - if it ain't broke etc.

I'd start thinking about the battery soon, on my 06 i had to jump it once then it went downhill fast. It would have difficulty starting and then just one morning nothing. Replaced it and starts perfect now. Battery life seems to be about 6 years in our battery size at least. As for the tuneups i agree with everyone else, no need to mess with something that works fine

As mentioned a tune up nowadays is replacing the spark plugs at whatever interval the manufacturer recommends in the owners manual, besides that it is just fluid checks, and other checks. You don't even have to replace the plugs if they look okay, but a new set can't hurt either. Cars are definately lower maintenance than they used to be.
