vibe top speed

Okay, so there i was...driving on Rt. 33 from Columbus, Ohio to Athens, Ohio. A riced out Neon pulls up beside me and tries to get around me. Just then, the Pontiac Grand Prix in front of me guns it. the Neon beside me in the right lane guns it and tries to get by me. I decided to play along and drop into third gear for some fun. Needless to say, I hit the lift and blew the doors off of the neon. Also needless to say, the Grand Prix blew my doors off. I redline my GT in 4th gear going about 105 mph then drop it into 5th. At that point i realized that my rev limiter kicked in at 6k rpms and 110 mph. So, i, being upset that the neon came from behind because i could only go 110, am wondering if that is the computer limited top speed. If it is, do we not have lift in 5th gear? Does that mean Pontiac decided to give us two overdrive gears on a GT engine? Please, someone help me hear, I want 5th gear lift!

You've got a problem then. You should easily be able to get lift in 5th. There is no electronic speed limiter but the Vibe GT is drag limited to about 129-mph (actual speed as the speedometer read slightly high). The only limiter is the rev limiter which kicks in around 8400-rpm.

You'll get 'em next time! Maybe you can make up for it, on your way to the Ohio meet!

even if you had all of 6th left, you wont be able to pull anymore speed out of that gear, its an overdrive gear and we dont have enough hp in our cars to pull that kind of speed out of it.yogi

Actually, both 5th and 6th are overdrive gears but Yogi is correct, top speed is usually acheived in 5th. 6th is really only for fuel economy.

I've had my GT with the speedo at 135 mph in fifth and still pulling but traffic got in my way and had to slow down. And i have a friend with an XRS Matrix up to 138mph but it seemed like the computer was limiting him from going faster.

Sigh. For about the millionth time, the Vibe/Matrix speedometer is not 100% accurate. No vehicle speedo is totally accurate. The Vibe/Matrix speedo is at least 7 mph high at speeds over 100 mph. Unless you used calibrated equipment to obtain the top speed number, your claim is not valid. Stock GTs are drag limited (no computer limiter) to a top speed of approx 129. Stock base Vibes are drag limited to approx 115.

You're wrong, Nova! Just kidding. I've seen 130 INDICATED on my speedo with my Vibe GT and I've seen 174mph indicated on my C5. The C5 is probably pretty accurate because I was really flying and deep into 5th gear for over a mile. I was cresting a small hill and lifted. The car probably had 180mph in it with my mods. Stock, Chevrolet says it's capable of 175mph.

No i agree with Nova. The speedo can be off by a few mph the faster the car is going. There are a few exceptions i think thou. I believe the discrepancy ( spelling?? ) lies in the mechanics of an analog display. I believe Digital speedos are far more accurate. Also i had a 92 Crown Victoria before and the speedos on those need to be pretty accurate for the police use, and when i checked it against a military GPS unit it was only off by 1 mph even in triple digits.

I believe the consumer version of the CV uses a standard speedo, not necessarily more accurate than any other. But police use the Police Interceptor CV, which I believe has specially calibrated gauges...anyone correct me if I'm wrong...

Is the Vibe/Matrix speedo mechanical or electric? If it is cable driven then I could totally see it being off.
