Due to the sheer number of spammers, it took me a while to get them rounded up but I have and have proceeded with cleaning up the threads they spammed. I'm going solo at the moment so it's taking a while but either I'll hopefully be joined with some help soon or I'll get through it eventually. :D

They froze new member registration over on MO.

I suppose that's one temporary way of handling it

That would be my suggestion at this point. Either freeze it or moderate it. The only other fully effective option is moderating posts but I really don't want to go down that route.
Unfortunately, I can't implement either option so I'll see if I can get a hold of Mike over the weekend and get something worked out. Thankfully I needed the brain-break today but I also had work to be getting done. :)

Indeed it is and it will probably continue to. They're registering about as fast as I can remove them. I'll try to keep a close eye on things and make sure it doesn't get too bad.

Out of habit I've been making spam reports.
Does that help you on days like today? If not I can cut it out :geek:

By all means please keep making the reports. It helped on a couple of posts today that might have been overlooked if not for the red highlighting the report tags them with. It also gives me a report I can look at to make sure I got everything removed that a member has noticed. It certainly doesn't make things harder or clutter anything up, if that's your concern. :)
Thanks for all your help today and thanks for your patience! I'll get a hold of Mike and see what we can do to get this resolved.

I bring good news! I was able to reach Mike very quickly by email and he made a change to the registration process which should at least slow our attackers down significantly.
So once again, a HUGE thank you to MKowdley, our ever-helpful admin for not only keeping this site running for so many years but also for saving us from the evil spam hoard!

I'm hoping to have registration turned back on soon. it would figure that this massive wave of spam would come along when I'm getting slammed with work at my full-time job, so i can't focus on writing a solution to the spam issue.
I've been manually approving all new members for the past 6+ months. When it's 20-30 per day, it's not a big deal... 200 is another matter unless I can automate it some.

I agree.

I am more than willing to become a moderator as I typically check in here at least once a day...

I just reported a spam post. It is re-assuring to hear that reporting does not cause any further workload or anything for the mods. I will definitely continue to keep an eye out and report anything suspicious I see.

Huge thanks to millster, mkowdley and the rest of the mods for continuing to do an awesome job for us !

I say keep the spammers coming. I'm saving up all the bounty I've collected from reporting spammers that I'll soon be able to retire and live off my vast wealth of genvibe dollars.

Edit - oh wait, just found the currency exchange calculator to convert genvibe dollars to US dollars. Nevermind, guess I'll be around for a while

Thanks for reporting the posts CP! I always click on "Report This Post" just to make sure and I was happy to see that they had all been reported already. Keep up the good work mods and GenVibers ;)!

Would adding a Captcha feature to the registration/post process eliminate the spam?

I just cleaned them up, I was out for a couple days, thanks for reporting.

I know there is a registration confirmation section (asks a question a human can only answer) but I think the problem is that the spam is coming from actual humans (!!), not spambots. I will look to see if there is a way to turn on Captcha... Thanks.
