I understand buy is cheaper than try to RE-BUILD. Can you Rebuild or is the case, forks and other stuff trash? I do not want to buy another junky box.

From what I've read about the failures, when the bearing goes it takes the housing with it so rebuilding would be next to impossible. So don't waste your time, just buy the 6 speed.

Almost cheaper to buy an Automatic Transmission and convert the car to Auto.

not really. You'd need the shifter, a new radiator that includes the tranny cooler, and oil lines from the tranny to the radiator, and a new auto tranny computer/ECU. I don't know if the axle shafts are the same. Plus the tranny, of course. The manual tranny brake master cylinder also includes the master clutch cylinder, so If you were switching from an auto to a manual, then you'd need to replace the master brake cylinder but to go from manual to auto you could probably cap off the clutch part and leave that half unused.

Usually vibers replace their 5 speeds when the bearing noise becomes apparent. If yours is past that to the point where none of the gears work, then it must be really trashed inside, and a rebuild would be way more expensive than a replace.

since you have two threads on this topic, I'll post the link to the other one as a cross reference viewtopic.php?f=12&t=39695" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; so interested people can find the other half of the discussion

it's around $2500 for a new transmission. That's either with the new 5 speed, or the new MWR JSPEC 6 speed (same FDR as the 5 speed) so if you are wanting a bit more performance with the same MPG, go 6spd. If you want a new 5 spd, redesigned to not fail, then I'd go through a shop to get one.

Yes, but not with the 5 speed final drive ratio. That makes a huge difference on the highway when it comes to rpm's with the 1zz. Don't get me wrong, I'd take whatever I could get just to have the 6 speed.

the 6speed is worth it despite the final drive putting your rpms a few hundred higher

i still get great mileage in my 03GT....the 6 is better around town though....easy to keep it under 3000rpm without lugging the engine

If you don't get the LSD, the 6-speed with the 5-speed FDR is only $2000 ;)

Edit: $1800 if the shifter shaft on the 5-speed can be reused.

I totally agree :D For someone wanting to keep their vibe for a VERY long time, it would be money well spent from a reputable shop!

I emailed Monkey wrench racing. When installing the listed 6-speed in a 5-speed car the 6-speed shifter shaft is required. But still $2000 for a new 6-speed transmission is way better than the $2450 Toyota charges.

Post pics of the inside. I have a spare bad one,and would like to know if there's any cool looking parts inside worth taking the thing apart to get at. ;)
