2009 Vibe - AWD light

Long time reader, but a first-time poster.
The all-wheel drive light has been on in my '09 for the last month or so. It came on very shortly after panic braking and swerving to avoid an accident in front of me. Driveability's not affected, so I haven't been that worried. I had it in the garage yesterday for some unrelated work, and I asked them to pull any codes from the PCM, and they got C1298. Depending on where you read, it could be two different codes. Some Internet sources says it's related to the linear solenoid in the transfer case (a non-Matrix Toyota manual), and some (mostly GM sources, but not Vibe specific) say 'PCM Indicated Class 2 Serial data link malfunction'.
I talked to the service department at my local dealer who spoke to someone in their shop who had never heard of a 'linear solenoid'. Does someone have a better service manual then the crummy eBay one I have, or an authoritative list of codes, that can point me a bit more in the right direction? Should my shop be looking for Toyota or GM codes when they do their testing?
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this problem!
