Wifes mad at me... Bought stuff to upgrade my stereo again.

Post by Wingnut »

Yeah... She's mad at me. But when it's in she won't be. Just bought another amp, another sub, upgraded supplies including a breaker, 1 gauge wiring etc, new battery and some more dyna mat. I got it for a steal through my connections and spent $200.00 compared to what it sells for at $850.00 total. I'll post more when I install it. I'm going to do some additional fiberglass work on the enclosure and amp racks since I'm already working on something else for it. :geek: Should be one of the louder and cleaner sounding stereos I have had. 8-)

I have to much respect at my age in my neighborhood. Sound goes off atleast 1/4 mile from my home. Most of what the system is for is competing on a local basis in SPL comps. :)

Sorry for the high-jacking, but, Dyno-mat? A few years ago I lined my doors, hood, and spare tire storage area. For the doors I cut the pieces up small and stuck them on the exterior body surface by reaching through that smallish hole with the pieces, I then re-applied the factory plastic cover over the door.
The stereo does sound better, but I expected more attenuation of the road noise.
Where else would you apply dyna-mat?

Road noise is the biggest complaint I have with the Vibe. It is quieter in my wife's 2001 Prius at 60mph. So much so that when I'm alone in my Vibe and at freeway speeds I prefer listenning to talk shows (Adam Carrola!) than music.

I will probably replace the cheap tires I purchased 2 years ago with some high-rated quiet tire.

Also, I have a Yakima ski-rack and rocket box on my Vibe which probably makes some difference.

Suggestions?

Oh, and your wife will cheer up when she sees you happily riding home in your Vibe with a box of chocolate. :)

Well brother welcome to the club :P My wife ALWAYS gets pissed at me when I purchase any "non- essential" thing for the family. I just simply send her on another Kohl's shopping spree and Life is GOOD  As long as you have the extra funds then it's perfectly OK. You could easily be spending the time and $$$ on the girl next door instead. Keep standing your ground and remind her how these expenditures bring you happiness, expand your knowledge of audio/electronics, and will lengthen your lifespan so she'll have more of you when you get older. Not sure if that makes any sense but it sounded good

LOL! She's fine... She always is. She is use to it. I've been doing competitions since we met and she knows its just what I'm in to.

As far as where else I'm putting the dynamat at... Firewall, floor board and another layer in the rear on the hatch and quarter panels.

I would sound deaden, but, then I wouldn't hear the road noise or the motor as well. I guess I'm odd that way, I have a nice stereo, but, use it very little. It comes from my VW days I guess. Where I had no insulation of any kind, and had to listen to the motor to shift. Makes you appreciate all the little noises, warnings, and conversations your car has with you.

Maybe if I get an electric car one day. Lol

The only thing I can think of that Dynomat is good at is to reflect the HEAT back into the passenger compartment. If is could reduce the road noise the car manufactures would bond it to the body in the first place. You really need is a liteweight soft sound absorbing padding like jude or fiberglass. batts. I plan to use the insulation jackets that you can wrap around water heater tanks. It has a vinyl plastic cover over a 2 inch fiberglass blanket. The Vinyl will not tear. I would add some type of padding between the plastic water shield (in the doors) and inner rigid plastic door panel. I believe the manufacture already has a small piece of jude padding in there.

The jackets I would use in the back areas of the car. If I have to, I can reverse or remove them out to get behind it if something needs repair.

Dynamat is designed to stiffen up the metal and prevent rattles.

It doesn't so much stiffen as it softens in reality. The dyno mat absorbs the vibrations in the same way a sponge absorbs water. Dyno mat on a cymbal will absorb all the vibrations and make it "thunk" instead of ring.

Putting insulation in the doors would reflect heat and deaden somewhat, but, will not deaden as well as the dyno mat, seeing as you only need 1/4 of the area (panel) covered to do a very effective job. Not to say reflecting heat isn't good in various climates, but, that foil encased bubble wrap is just as effective at far less weight. Use that in conjunction with the dyno mat and you may reach near luxury car levels.

I bet I can dampen a cymbal with Duct Tape. I seen the Dynomat video with the cymbal. There is also a thick coating that you can paint on the as well.
I put underbody spray coating onto the plastic wheel well shields.... That made the stone hits sound duller then before, but it did not suppress the road noise.
I looked at a lot of new cars at the car show, (at the wheel well shields). Buick and some others use a felt like fabric instead of thin plastic.

The main thing is to stop the air waves of sound in the air spaces of the car from getting into your ear.

I would think some form of expanding foam would do well. Something for windows and doors that stays less than rigid. That might do well in conjunction to dyno mat on the steel panels.
