I had a garmin nuvi 255 for 2 years and it finally died a couple days ago, so the question is, which brand to go with next? I liked the garmin but it seemed retarded with directions quite alot but nothing to great to handle, has anyone had a tom tom or magellan? I want to stay around $150, and preferably have that include free maps for life alsothanks,Nick

I got a Magellan as a gift first and it died and then I bought a Tom Tom. I preferred the Magellan, you could tap on the icons on the screen and it would bring up the information on that location, the Tom Tom won't do that.

I had a TomTom for a while, and it was pretty good. But then I got a Droid X and started using Google Navigation. I never want to go back.The live updating of quickest route based on traffic is invaluable, and the satellite images overlay is quite helpful as well.Plus I can use the same device at the same time to play music from any one of scores of online radios or cloud music services.Seriously, if you're wanting to pay $150 anyway, I would just go ahead and get an Android powered phone.

I just use my iPhone.

I use my Nuvi still, have had it almost 5 years. My sister and a friend both have Tom Tom and the directions seem stranger on that one than on "claire" (my Nuvi) I do use my navigation on my phone sometimes if I am the passenger and dont want to get her out, its alright.

I use google maps on my Blackberry or the maps app that came with it. Both work fairly well.I gave my old LG gps to my Dad. It works well but there are no updates for it and it's about 3 years old... It can be funny driving down a road that doesn't exist!

gettin a phone for gps is out of the question, I think its way overpriced to get a smartphone and pay the extra for data plans and everything, when i dont use internet on mine or my wifes phone, good option but not for me,

I've had my Garmin 265WT for 2 years and I'm quite happy with it. It's not perfect but the few problems I've had usually lay with the maps themselves and not the unit and as someone once told me: "the GPS is a member of the driving team... so is your brain. Don't follow your GPS blindly" It saved my but more than once.My friend has a Magellan and we tried it for a roadtrip and I came out dissapointed in it. It took a really long time for the unit to get its bearings in town, the sound for directions was cristal clear but for some reason all the street names were whispered incomprehensibly. the ABC kayboard was the major annoyance since you have to keep alternating between the letter screen and the number screen to type in a canadian postal code.I did not try Tom-Tom
