Alright........Earthquake!!!

Well, I can now cross that one off my bucket list. I was high atop swaying in the breeze, lovin' every minute of it. I evacuated, got in my car, and got the hell home knowing traffic in the Delta Quadrant would be a nightmare. 6.0; no damage at home; just pictures moved. The cat was in our safe room; smart cat. She is quite unsettled from the P and immediately following S wave that came up from Mineral Virginia at the surface level.

Yep I lived through a few of them. Why did they evacuate? Sounds a little paranoid to me.

To check for structural damage. A surface 6.0 that lasted 45 seconds in an area that normally sees no more than 2.5 on the Richter Scale could cause structural damage, move water and gas lines, and cause collapse of subway tunnels. All trains are running at 15 mph to ensure no tracks moved either. It was fun. Now I just need to chase down that elusive tornado, and my natural disaster bucket list will be completed.

We had a good shake, but no damage, and I don't get to evacuate. From the shaking I got here I know there are a few bridges I won't take on the way home. Glad I don't have to use the Harry Nice 301 bridge between MD and VA. I heard the National Cathedral took some damage.Cell phones were pretty useless. Good for a few minutes, then everyone got on them and the infrastructure just couldn't handle the load. Texting worked for longer, then it got overloaded. Email seemed to work throughout. Gotta love smartphones. Connectivity seems to be better now. Will be interesting to watch the TV news people hype the thing.(between hyping hurricane Irene, of course)

A Tweet that came across my feed a little while ago: "Okay, all the Cali *******s mocking New York for their reaction to the earthquake - I saw what you did when it snowed. #shutyourpiehole"

But on a serious note, I hope all is well.

In 1977, I hung on to the bumper of a VW bug while hail pounded my body in OKC. A twister touched down just blocks away, but I could not see it. I've seen a large dust devil in Turkey, but that doesn't count.

Hope all is well Caretaker.I've been through a couple here in the Chicagoland area. Pretty scary s*** when you're asleep and you wake up to your bed shaking like crazy.

...I'll bet that Carly Simons' lyrics "...I feel the earth move..." suddenly came to mind for many New Yorkers!?!?

Apparently some people here in Ottawa felt it too. I was not one of them. The one we had last year was quite enough for me.

Might as well send them home, productivity was shot for the day. Except that cutting all those people loose at the same time made for an epic bad rush hour

Actually it happened about 1 or 2 years ago.. woke me up in the middle of the night.. I didn't know what it was but I was certainly in the middle of Chicago (abt 5 miles from Wrigley). I fell back asleep not knowing what happened, then news said earthquake..

Illinois has had earthquakes in '04, '06, and '08. The first one was in the middle of the night and I happened to be awake, the other two I was off in college in Indiana (though the '08 one was kind of a big deal or whatever, ha).Lovemyraffe... I posted that one on facebook just now, because that was the best response I've seen so far.I thought the evacuation was a bit much, until I realized that a lot of the buildings on the east coast are very old, and very not designed for the earth moving, because it doesn't happen. Although a 5.8 earthquake is not actually very much, apparently there was slight damage to some historical buildings. Plus, chaos is fun

Some places across the lake in Vermont felt it, but nothing here in Plattsburg that I heard about. I was driving at the time it happened, and didn't notice anything odd. Several years ago my wife and I experienced a bad one about 10 miles south of here, would not want to go through that again, whole house, bed, everything shook. Woke up to my wife screaming and the look of terror on her face at the time is burned into my mind. JR
