can i do a 5 speed to 6 speed swap? if so what would need?

someone on here has done it, as far as i know, a 6 speed from a GT, and a lot of time. should be a straight up swap.

would i need to get a new shifter or are they the same?and y does the 5 speed cost more than the 6 speed?

would i need to get new front axles?

the shifter will be the same, the knob will have the wrong pattern, but that's it. and i don't know about prices for them.

ive found a couple for $1000. i feel that the 5 speed is gonna go out again. would like to replace it with a 6 speed when it does or before it does.has anyone here swapped them yet?

There have been a few on here. As I recall it's a direct swap from a Vibe or Matrix, just add drive axles. The Celica 6 speed is incompatible.

poor gas on the highway, and having issues with the second one. and if there are so many issues with the 5 speed toyota should fix it.

The 6 speed will lower your fuel economy, even in 6th gear. It was made to utilize the GT engine which revs much higher than the base. This being said, I plan on replacing mine w/ the 6 speed if it ever conks out on me, because of all the horror stories I've heard about the 5's. There's an epic thread in the Edmunds townhall talk forum filled with people talking about failed attempts to get GM or Toyota to admit there's a problem.

I've got a 6-speed in my formerly 5-speed Vibe.Last year I picked up a 50,000 km trans from an 05 Vibe GT for about $700 cdn from a wrecker. Transmission was a perfect drop-in, no other changes needed.The fuel mileage hasn't changed really but it does rev a bit higher on the highway. And you have to shift... a lot

Several members have done the swap successfully, and nerdydaddyo wrote up some pretty good info on his swap:

I would read everything on it, since the axles are a bit different between the 5 speed and 6 speed. The 6 speed ones are slightly longer, but the GT passenger side axle fits in a brace that bolts to the engine block, and the mounting point for the brace does not exist on the base motor. Now you might be able to mount it without the extra brace if you want to try, but I don't know if anyone on here has tried that. Most people seem to keep the shorter 5 speed axles after their 6 speed swap.

I've swapped out my 5 speed for the GT 6 speed!

My 5 speed spun the bearing, so I found a 6 speed from an XRS through Keystone Auto Parts for about $900.
It's a direct swap, all I would suggest is a new slave cylinder and new throw out bearing while you're in there.
Take your time, and trust me it takes time....
The only issue we ran in to was that the 6 speed is longer by about an inch and a half over the 5 speed, and we were hitting the fender well when trying to pop it up into the engine bay. It's a PITA to get lined up right without a creeper or something wheelie to maneuver it with.

It will bring your gas mileage down a bit, but will always keep it ready for the power band.
I think at 70mph it sits at 3200rpm, if I'm not mistaken.

Also, get a new ball so people don't try and grab reverse and instead find 6th lol
