OK..So Who's Using Toyota 0w-20....

Post by Capt.Vibe »

.......or any other brand in their 09/10 1.8L? I was at a Toyota dealer looking at Scions with a friend and picked up 5 liters of 0W-20 for $5.65/pc which is a great price for a synthetic in Montreal. At that price point I'll gladly use the 0W-20 year round for the required 4 oil changes a year, although it sure is a waste changing synthetic oil every 3 months. Parts guy refused to sell me more than 5 bottles saying he needs his stock and everyone gets enough for 1 oil change, so I'll need to drive around to get more. I just don't see how this price can last without going up at some point soon. Anyone else using this in their Vibes? Any differences observed from 5W-20 Does it really improve fuel economy at all?

I haven't tried it yet myself - but when I asked at the Toyota dealer, I found out that they have two different 0W20's - full Synthetic and Synthetic "blend". I believe I was given the same $5.65 price for the blend - the "full synthetic" was still over $9 if I remember correctly.Technically it should improve economy somewhat - but I suspect it would be difficult to directly measure the difference. 1%? 2%? Many other variables can have a much greater impact than that to be sure of any noticeable difference.Lets just say that it decreases your fuel consumption by .1L/100km (for me that would be about 1.4% of my current average). Over 8,000km, that would save up to 8 liters of gas - or a bit over $10 at today's prices. I can usually find 5W20 on sale for around $11 or less for enough to do the oil change. Comparing to that, you may break even. If it reduces wear though at the same time - then you'd definitely be ahead. That will be extremely difficult to measure though... unless you're dedicated enough to do a used oil analysis before and after to compare!I just wouldn't expect any drastically noticeable difference at the pump. If it makes you feel better to use it - then go for it! It's certainly the cheapest 0W20 I've seen around. I recently stocked up on enough 5W20 to last me for a couple of years though - so I won't likely be trying it too terribly soon. Always a sucker for a fantastic deal...John

Tried it once... the black bottle. They said it was synth... but for the miniscule price I paid I have my doubts...

Looks like the black bottles are out. Those were a semi synthetic blend. Parts guy was pretty firm that the new grey bottles are a full synthetic at the same price as the black bottles. I asked if he had anything at a higher price and he said he didn`t. He was also petty certain the price, which hasn`t changed will rise now that the old stock of black bottles is finished. Some posters on BITOG claim that 0W-20 can`t be refined from crude, not sure how true that is. http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/W...glish
