Advice Needed: Jeep Liberty w/ Infinity System

My fiance's front speakers are blown so I went and picked up a set of Infinity reference 6.5"s. I have a thing for Infinity, always have. So I go to install them and realize when pulling the old speaker out, that the Infinity system that came with her car has the amp bolted to the actual speaker? I've never seen this setup and of course, the plate that the amp is mounted to is a part of the original speaker, (removed)? So I'm left with two options:1) Easy route and cut the actual speaker wires and just attach them to the new speaker. I tried this and the sound is noticeable lower and less powerful. Did not like.2) Get a small foam pad, two bolts with lock nuts that will fit through the amps bolt holes when mounted to the old speaker, mount to the door separately, and run wires from the amps connectors to the new speaker. It seems like Option 2 is not too hard, just a little bit of work. Any thoughts or ideas? I threw up some rough drawings.

If I remember correctly from doing Dodges with the Infinity system it's not an amp but a xover. I would leave it and just connect the new speaker to the leads the old speaker was on. Thats what I always did and they sounded pretty good with reference series.

I tried just connecting, but the speaker sounded really weak when compared to the other that had the amp/crossover/annoying box attached to it still. I'm sure she won't mind so I guess I'll just cut and crimp when I get home tonight.

Hmmm..are the new infinity speakers 4ohm or 2ohm? A LOT of factory systems run 2ohm (sometimes LOWER) Every time you double resistance, you half the power... every time you halve the resistance you double the power.. 50w @4ohm could be 100w@2ohm and 200w@1ohm conceivably.. Then again 50w @2ohm could be 25w @4ohm... dig..
