Switch from stock CD to OEM navigation?

Hey all just wanted to start off with being new to the forum and Vibes in general (just picked her up yesterday!)Anyways it's a '04 base with manual transmission and it has a stock CD radio in it. Half the display is burnt out (which I've heard is common) and since I was wanting to replace it anyways I was thinking of just getting the stock navigation system. Is that possible at all or would it end up being cheaper and easier to just do an aftermarket NAV system? Thanks in advance

Well technically it would be cheaper to replace the burnt out bulbs. I had this same issue and replaced all three bulbs for $4. It is detailed in this thread Radio lights going out. I bought my bulbs from Radio Shack (item #272-1092) but the thread discusses other options for ordering bulbs online. I didn't feel like waiting and these worked just fine.I'm not sure it would be easier to do either NAV option. Either way - stock or aftermarket - I'm thinking you will be a decent amount of installation because you will have to install the antenna for the GPS. Other threads quote this work around $200 from a professional installer. Just something to think about.Option number 3 is to buy my stock single CD head unit in the FS/W section. Located here if you are interested. Good luck.

don't buy the stock navigation unit.I have it, came with my car. It has a separate 6 disc changer under the passenger seat and works pretty well but is insanely out dated. There are no real NAV disc upgrades and you would be infinitely better off with a newer after market one that supports all the newer maps and connections like ipods and whatnot.Remember, this is not an uninformed opinion. I own one. Don't waste your money on going to an older and less reliable technology.

Get a cheap aftermarket HU (will change the sound for the better) AND buy a GPS.. You'll get away cheaper, and have more functionality and better sound than going stock..

I've found newer versions of the navigation disc. As new as fall of 2011. Are you saying that these newer discs don't work or that they only update the maps/POI but the interface and functionality itself is still outdated and bad?

IF you have an iPhone 4 or 4S look into decks by JVC or Kenwood. There is an app for these decks that allows you to use the iPhone for Nav, showing the directions on the decks screen. Best part is the app is $0.99. (JVC Motion-X; only works with entry level Kenwood decks as JVC makes them for Kenwood)
Another option with the aftermarket deck with nab is to install the Antenna inside the dash. It doesn't need to be mounted on the outside of the car, horizontally inside the dash, close to the windshield works fine.

I just had someone selling a OEM nav unit from a 2003 and I was considering it but wasn't sure if 1) that it would actually work in my moons & tunes current setup and 2) if it was any good.
I've heard it's quirky but once you learn the buttons it's fine. But these comments made it seem bad

or Pioneer, my deck uses motion GPX, and is made for Pandora. I can also watch Netflix and use other apps on the head unit.
