I am a very stupid person. Drained tranny fluid, overfilled oil.

So like the topic says, I screwed the pooch royally. Went to do an oil change and removed the wrong drain bolt, drained the automatic tranny fluid, then overfilled the oil and committed the cardinal sin of not checking the oil before I drove off. It had trouble getting into gear from a stop a couple times which should have been a tip off. So I drove about ten kms, checked my oil and figured out my mistake. I drained out all the oil immediately and refilled it and added 3 quarts of tranny fluid. It seems to shift fine and the engine is not making any noises that I can detect right now. What kind of damage could I have done here driving with no tranny fluid and 8 quarts of oil in the crankcase? I knew that drain bolt looked too small....

With any luck you got off lucky and didn't damage anything...but you could have burned a clutch or two in the tranny...

Yeah fingers are crossed. I can't believe I did this. Its not leaking oil so far. The air filter is dry. I might pull the plugs to see if they got any oil on them. Im just sick about this....:S

We all have bonehead moments in life... The difference between the stupid people and smart people is the smart people learn from the mistake. So what did YOU learn?Hope it turns out ok for you

Like keithvibe said, hopefully you learned from your mistake. Chances are you didn't do any major damage. I'd worry more about what you could have done to the transmission more than the engine. Once you refill the tranny fluid, you should suspend the front end and run the car through ALL the gears, including reverse to make sure the fluid gets properly circulated. You should also let the transmission warm up. Hopefully there wasn't any serious damage. Good luck.
