Low idle and stutter

Hello! I have spent the past several hours searching and digging through this awesome site. I just bought a used 2004 Vibe, FWD, VVT-i. I am having an issue and could use some advice, (please note I am inept at mechanics) When running (engine cold or warm) I'm getting about 900-1100rpm. When I shift into drive, my rpm drops to about 600. While driving, if I come to a stop, I sometimes get a 'stutter' like it's going to die, but it hasn't actually died. Yet. So, while trying to fix this, I turned up the idle by adjusting the idle screw a wee bit, no stutter. cOoL I say. Until tonight while working on it I discovered 1 spark plug, in PERFECT shape. No signs of wear, tear, nothing. It is the correct OEM plug, as are the others, but they show the kind of wear I would expect to see after ~140k miles. This one shows zero signs of wear. At this point, I'm lost. Any suggestions? I really can't afford to spend a lot, more like any, money having a shop look at it

Marrtok.....low engine idle and stutter could very well indicate a vacuum leak. Has it thrown a code number?? There are threads here referring to replacing intake manifold gasket which was a rather common problem on the 1.8 engine. A rather easy and cheap fix.Ken

that is NOT an idle screw. That is a protection for throttle plate. So it does not slam shut. I believe the idle is governed by the ISC idle speed control...under the throttle body . SWhich allows specific air thru depending on engine and air temps. I also have been having the same issue intermittently. And have been checking everything befiore replacing the ISC. I di dreplace the intake gasket . No significant change. I wonder if anyone has actually replaced the ISC and cured this???
