That looks serious! You have other pics? Does it seem like it has oil on it or tranny fluid?

doesn't look like it's off the vibe. it's got an O ring seal and some threads on it. possibly from the crossfire.

I really hope that those are NOT your hands holding that part This looks like some sort of shifter mechanism. Either to a gearbox or drive selector. Possibly from 2WD to AWD to ??? I'd say it is likely a spare part that somehow got dropped off/out of somebody's vehicle by accident. It looks to be free from any obvious stress or cracks to where it would have "broke" off a vehicle. Whatever this is off of, the vehicle probably in question is not drivable without it The Crossfire & Vibe are probably safe as this part may not be off of either of them

Looks kind of like a cam chain tensioner to a motorcycle or something.

How in the hell did that just fall out?!?!?!?!?Listen to Keith. Don't drive it. Look to make sure it is indeed from YOUR vibe. If it is, do not drive it get it towed to a shop for repairs (if you are unable to fix it yourself).

Thanks all who have responded, it will be towed tomorrow to the Toyota dealer that fix a starter problem I had and an oil leak around the timing chain tensioner/assembly on March 4th. My wife just noticed it about 2 days ago. I'm been driving back and forth to work for 2 days about 25 miles each way doing between 70 to 80. Only odd thing I notice is that the power steering fluid container is coated with oil not sure if it's from missing this part or if it was there prior. The flame retardant cover (can think of the right word right now) on the inside of the hood is coated with oil. Again not sure if from this part or a prior leak.. If not from my car what a freaky coincidence..

With that part missing you should be losing alot of oil. Hey goodluck with the repair let us know how it goes!

Not sure I'd take the car back there the next time

It was kinda funny, to be honest I originally didnt know what that part was but when I was flipping through that manual to look up how to change my intake gasket I saw that picture and thought hey, that looks familiar.

So here's the update decided instead of towing it I went to the dealer with the part this past Friday (3/18/11) and the Manager of Service and the Head Mechanic were there, they said it was from the Vibe but it was the old part that the mechanic had left in the engine compartment which as we can see fell out. He started if it was out the engine, lots of oil would flow out and the timing chain would slip but the car would not start. So all in all it worked out ok but not for the mechanic that worked on my car they were docking his pay for this error. I kept the part as a paperweight. It is an '03 Vibe GT with 131,000 miles on it still on original clutch, waiting to get the Exedy Stage 2 clutch in as soon as the 1st one gives up..Thanks to everyone, I know I could count on you.

I had a Mechanic leave a $100 Snap-On Ratchet in the engine bay of my fiance's old PT cruiser. It was taken to 2 shops that week and they both said it was theirs.
