lately, it's been real hard to get into 1st and sometimes 2nd gear. i've looked around and followed advice about letting the clutch out a bit then back in. i'm starting to get kinda worried about it. is it the synchro's or the cables?

an easy first step would be to clean and lubricate the shifter cable bushings at the transmission. These pics are from a 5-speed, but show the part. Remove the clip, take the cables off the tranny, clean the ends and grease them up. Might not fix your problem, but token easy compared to replacing synchros, so rule out the easy stuff first

Try coasting in neutral, clutch released before you shift into first

You could try solid bushings. I bought some from ebay. I think they're brass.

You could be low on fluid for the hydraulic clutch. I had the same problem with my Toyota pickup. I topped off the reservoir, and it fixed the problem for a while. I later found out the slave cylinder was leaking and had to replace it.

Due to the cold temp, I think you should just drain the tranny and put new oil. As for the oil, there are so many choices.... I use ATF in mine and shifts really smooth even in the cold. New oil in the tranny does wonders in how it shifts.. I change mine every 10k and even in that amount I can tell the difference. Yohei

do you know where the slave cylinder is? it has metal lines running from the brake fluid reservoir to the front of the tranny. you will see a black rubber boot. move that and look at the piston, if its wet, you probably have a slave cylinder leak. a temp fix would be to bleed it. just like a brake caliper there is a bleeder valve. pump the clutch pedal few times, while holding it down, loosen the bleeder and tighten, try it few times.. refill reservoir and go for a drive.
