Toyota "Corolla" Matrix?

Post by ragingfish »

So I was chillin in Boston, watching TV last night, and a Toyota commercial comes on. They got their cheezy jingles going and whatnot, and then, they're like "the hottest car of the year, the Toyota Corolla Matrix." And it wasn't a fluke either, because they kept saying "Corolla Matrix." What's the deal? Anyone know why they feel it necessary to incorporate the base platform of the Matrix into the ads?

probably just a marketing ploy. I bet they think that if they advertise it as a new version of a corolla (which a lot of people know that name), it will go over better then saying, and here's an all new car.

The Corolla has been such a profitable and well known model for them for a long time. Maybe they think linking the Matrix to the Corolla will let folks know that although the Matrix is relatively new, you get all the reliability and brand stability of the Corolla. Can't imagine GM adertising the new Corolla Vibe though, but based on the troubles some folks have in finding Vibes (like VibeyWannaBe), GM doesn't appear to need to even advertise the Vibe at all.

True...seems kinda stupid though. I hate cars with 5 names...like the PT Cruiser Limited Edition (which everyone knows is ANYTHING but limited, as every PT crapper on the road says limited edition), or the Buick Rendezvous Ultra Edition...GDI, pick ONE name and stick with it. VIBE. SUNFIRE. CAVALIER. EXPLORER. Stop with the 12 name thing!!!

I've never heard that mentioned in any TV/Print ads, but it is listed like that on the sticker of the Matrix (Corolla Matrix). You should already know the Matrix/Vibe is essentially a Corolla with a different body style. From Toyota's aspect, they have the Corolla S, Corolla LE, and the Corolla Matrix. Just like another model grade of the same vehicle.

Yeah, I knew it was based on the Corolla, but I didn't think that was grounds for selling it as a Corolla...That's like selling a Pontiac Sunfire Chevy Cavalier, or a Holden Monaro Pontiac GTO...

The sunfire and Cavalier are twins, the corrola and Matrix are not. If you think about it, the Malibu MAXX is not a Malibu's twin, it is a station wagon version of the Malibu, much like the Matrix is being advertised as a wagon version of the corolla

This is similar to the Suzuki Aerio that comes as a sedan or a wagon called the Aerio SX. Suzuki kept the name the same for it's wagon but Toyota gave the Corolla wagon body style a differet name: Matrix.Look at the front ends of the Corolla and the Matrix, aside from the grill and slightly revised headlights they are almost identical. Similar to the Camry (4-door) and the Camry Solara (2-door). Both are Camry based cars but the Solara has a slightly revised front end.Aerio sedan vs Aerio SX:Corolla vs Corolla Matrix:Camry vs Camry Solara:

The Toyota commercial I saw last night was for Corolla and Matrix, but distinguished between the two, stressing the familiar, reliable, dependable, old Corolla, and the "all new Matrix" but never said "Corolla Matrix"

Last year when I was test driving the MAtrix the little info tag that they put on the Shifter said Toyota Corolla Matrix. The corolla was in small letters. This is the only market the 5 door corolla is not sold in, so to make up for that they made the matrix part of the corolla lineup. If you stop and think about it the Matrix is a corolla wagon. So to answer your question the Matrix has always been referred to as the Corolla Matrix, in the eyes of Toyota. Makes it easier to include the Matrix sales into the corolla lineup.

Just seems like they feel it is a crime to create a new model, rather than make it a offspring of another model already in existence, ya know?I mean, I KNOW it's based on a corolla platform...but I didn't think they'd go to town calling it the "corolla matrix"...

It's been called a Corolla Matrix since the introduction and they are sticking with it.

Whatever the car's lineage, I think it's counterproductive and confusing to keep the Corolla name on this car. It's listed that way on fueleconomy.gov too.My registration says "TOYOTA 4 DOOR", and my proof of insurance just calls it a Matrix. I think that might be because State Farm had never heard of a Matrix when I called them, so they had to create an entry in the computer.

Actually the PT Cruiser is the Neon chassis with a cool skin! Go figure! Somewhat similar to the whole Corolla/Matrix/Vibe! Remeber those Suzuki Swifts,Pontiac Firefly, Chevy Sprint, Geo Metro etc.....same car
