A/C Clutch Oddity

I have a 2003 Toyota Matrix XR. Recently, I have noticed that the air conditioning system was not blowing out cold air. Looked under then hood and noticed that the clutch was not engaging. Did a little looking around and noticed that there was a issue with the Clutch Relay. A friend of mine has a Vibe, so I borrowed his relay, plugged it into my car and the clutch engaged. I removed his relay, plugged mine back in and the clutch engaged again. Later in the day, went to use the air and it was not blowing cold air again. Realizing that the relay could be bad, purchased a new relay for around $25. Used the air for about 2 days after that and it worked fine. Around the 3rd day, the air wasn't working. Looked at the clutch and wasn't engaging. Reset the relay and the clutch seemed to work again.Since then, it has been very intermittant on when it would work. Some times taking up to 2 minutes before the clutch would engage and then when it did, it was cycling on and off ever few seconds. Thinking that the system needed a recharge, I brought it to an a/c place and hooked it up to their machine, and said pressure was good, and didn't need recharged, but thought there was an electric issue.Today, I did some testing. First thing I did was to unplug the connector from clutch and attach a tester light. At first it was not lighting up, but as soon as I took the cover off of the box where the relay is, the light flickered. Then playing around with the relay we were able to turn on and off the light successfully. Then adjusted the clips a little to make sure that they connect well to the relay. After that it seems like that the clutch was running solidly for about 30-40 seconds, then started cycling, on a few seconds, off a few seconds. Then eventually stopped consistantly doing that. Played around with the relay again and although it wasn't consistantly doing it, it seemed like if we applied a little pressure, or shifted the relay around a little, the clutch kicked on. If we didn't touch the relay, it didn't seem to kick on.I have tried searching the web, and just cannot find something similar to this and was wondering if anyone has seen this, or if there is any suggestions on what else needs tested? Should we try jumpering pins 3 & 5 with a fused jumper wire (what amp should the fuse be?) to see if clutch runs continuously (therefore saying that the clutch coil is good)? Do we try and jumper/test the pressure switch to make sure that is working? Do we run a line from the battery directly to the plug on the clutch? Any ideas on where to go from here would be appreciated.thanks in advancemarc
