Spray paint safety...

Need someone who has painted their engine cover to help me out with this one...or at least someone who knows spray paints well enough....There is no "safe" drying time given on the PlastiKote ANODIZIT paint I used to paint my heat shield...but as well know, spray paint fumes are extremely flammable and combustible...So my question is...how long should I let the shield dry before it is safe to put it in the car and drive the car...In other words...it's been drying for about 1 hour now...I was going to reinstall it on the engine in an hour or so, but the car will be driven in about 10 hours (tomorrow morning). Will it be safe by that point, or should I leave it off another day?

Even though it's by far dry to the touch, and only smells if i stick my nose in it, still think i shoudl wait the extra day? Just wanna be sure...I gotta take the vibe in for service tomorrow, don't want them to throw a fit because the heat shield is missing...

quote:What is wrong with it that you are taking it back in?The Service Manager looked under the hood of the AWD the other day and said where did you get that stuff. I just smiled. Some minor stuff.* A/C not cold enough (checked the TSB about the temp knob cable adjustment, did not apply to me, mine was all set)* Steering issue -- car pulls strongly to either side. Thinking tires need rotation and balance (or I'd be so happy if they just needed replacement.)* Need chassis lube (or whatever is involved with that, since I did my own oil change)* General overall check of belts, componenets, etc. I'm driving to Boston Tuesday and just want them to look over the major stuff.Got lots of little squeaks and rattles and a radio issue I need to address, but because I have to have the car back in the same day, I am aiming to only have them deal with major issues. Plus, I gotta drive the old man's GA for the day, and I HATE his car, so the faster I get back the vibe, the happier a man I am.

quote:There is nothing to lube on the Chassis...I know...but they do other stuff for us too...i.e. lube the handbrake cable...so i'll just tell 'em to do whatever...quote:I talked to the service manager about the cars pulling either way and he set the alignents have been all right not. But, not sure... Mine pulls to both sides at times.. I think it gets caught in the grooves on the road at times or either does not fit into them since the Vibe is not that wide....Not sure what your'e saying, but yeah, I think it might be the alignment. I definitely notice it more on this car than on any other car I drive...it does seem to get "stuck" in grooves on the roadway...not sure why...figuring the tires are somewhat narrower than other cars maybe?quote:The A/C, the freon might be low... Thinking the same thing. I have visions, though, of them saying on the invoice "NPF: No problem found." Not sure...it only doesn't work when the temp is above like 85...same thing happened in the sunfire...they said on the sunfire, the system was just not very good...it was made with shoddy metals (aluminium instead of others stronger, less porous metals) and the compressor was probably smaller than it should've been. Hoping that isn't the case here.quote:The Old Man's GA.. LOL Not funny man. I HATE his car. It's dirty. It's LOW. It doesn't have a CD player. It's weak. It's a V6, but it has no power. I'm just used to the pep of the Vibe I guess...but yeah, I hate driving anyone else's car. I'm "at home" in the vibe. I just loathe everyone else's car.

Ah, F it. I'll just send it in tomorrow without the heat shield or the fuse cover...it's not supposed to rain, so I'm guessing the fuses should be ok for the short ride...I hate to do it, but I'm too nervous about installing them when it will have been less than 24 hours since they were last painted...

quote:Man, just install them tomorrow before you go in... Actually, the heat will help to cure it a bit....Problem is, I'm not taking it in. If I was, that would be what i'd do. But the old man is taking it in, because it needs to stay the day, and they won't give me a loaner (under 25).So he's leaving at 7 AM to take it in, no way in hell I'll be up then...That's why I'm having my dilemmas.

Nope. Not here. They explicitly said to me "We can't give you one because you're under 25, and our insurance doesn't cover drivers under 25."

You raise a good point -- but think about it. Hypothetically speaking, if I get into an accident, they can be sued, in addition to myself. At least that's what my dad said when I questioned him about it. He also said that the dealer's insurance may put a restriction on it -- i.e., it may say we prohibit the use of your vehicles by customers under 25 -- and they could lose their coverage by violating that rule.Believe me, these people usually do anything for me...my grandfather's relationship with the original founder and owner gives me a quasi-"royalty" there...if they could, they would, give me a car...Only 3 years till that point. LOL!

On the regular Plasti-coat stuff the time is 7 days for perminant non-scratable finish

I just took my car into the body shop today to get my doors fixed.Don't need a loaner, as I could drive my old car (Jeep XJ) but they couldn't offer me one anyways - I'm not yet 21. I heard it was 25 for most places, but apparently this dealership/bodyshop can let ya do it if you are 21. Bah, just 9 more months to go...
