There was a death rattle today for a few minutes prior to the complete compressor seizure, and I'm holding out some hope there's some way to resurrect it, but ... not really.Since I'm likely looking at replacing things, has anyone installed a system with slightly more capacity? Fresno get's pretty dang hot. To be fair, I have been solving lots of little problems along the way. Has anyone purchased a used compressor from ebay? limited warranty, low miles, ...Any recommended suppliers?Thanks,D²

I bought one from highqualityac on Ebay. I mainly bought it for the compressor clutch coil. It was $70 including shipping and it got to me in about 4 days. It looks almost brand new. I will post and let you know how it turns out changing it out tomorrow.

Sadly, A/C hasn't been quite as effective since the EPA pulled R 12 from being used. R 134a just doesn't do it as well.If your compressor died, you will need to evacuate and recharge. Also it is likely that little chunks of debris got introduced into the system and have traveled throughout which means the entire system should be flushed out and the expansion valve and rec/dryer replaced as well.Buying used is always a risk. If yours went bad at xxxx miles, doesn't it follow that the rest should follow suit?Logic would dictate that IF you do purchase used, get a used one from the Northern States or Canada. The odds of them having been used less and thus have more life left in them are much higher than a used Southern State unit.Dave

AC compressor from Ebay worked just fine AC Compressor clutch coil was bad in the old one swapped it out along with a new Belt and we are good to go!!!!

What year is your Vibe and how many miles? Trying to get an idea of how long the compressors last but I suspect there is a wide variation.

2004 AWD, 140k milesWell, the exact history is unknown. I do know the radiator and tranny were replaced not long before we bought it.

Actually ended up ordering a salvaged compressor from a car slightly newer and less used than mine. Ebay store in Texas. Will it cool better since everything's bigger in Texas?

Well, crap!I sent this message to the ebay supplier:Thanks for the update - the package arrived Friday afternoon. I went to install it this (hot) afternoon, and found that the clutch is dragging heavily. The thing should rotate freely on good bearings, but it scrapes audibly.My first look at swapping clutches is it's a real pain.I paid for a working unit, and I'm not so sure about this one. Did you check it?Still looking at my options... let me know what yours are.So... swapping compressor clutches? I read something somewhere about replacing rivets? Been there done that, but with a good shop. Now it's just my driveway.Ideas?I figure at this point I'll be waiting for his response and try to get a little better unit out of him to compensate for the hassle.Argh,D²
