GM kills Chevy... That is, Chevy is now a dirty word so you're supposed to say Chevrolet.Quote »We'd ask that whether you're talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends and family, that you communicate our brand as Chevrolet moving forward," said the memo, which was signed by Alan Batey, vice president for Chevrolet sales and service, and Jim Campbell, the G.M. division's vice president for marketing. "When you look at the most recognized brands throughout the world, such as Coke or Apple for instance, one of the things they all focus on is the consistency of their branding," the memo said. "Why is this consistency so important? The more consistent a brand becomes, the more prominent and recognizable it is with the consumer." (um, isn't Coke short for Coca-Cola?)They later backtracked:Quote »"We hope people around the world will continue to fall in love with Chevrolets and smile when they call their favorite car, truck or crossover 'Chevy'Sounds like GM marketing has too much time and money on their hands!

My theory - it is a hoax - the ad agency thought all of that up to generate a lot of free publicity.

oh..... i was hoping chevy was going under and that transformers 3 was going to have other brands, guess not. ; ; i was given the option to put my car in a list to possibly use my car in t3, but i turned it down. figured being a pontiac and all in a chevy movie i wouldn't be selected, plus the scratches.

Well, years ago Datsun did it, transformed into Nissan.Look at the Bell System and their list of name changes to the current VerizonLook at AT&T wireless, I've been a customer since the cell phone was created, I've been with the same company and I'm on my 4th or 5th provider name! Yet they survive......and thrive. It CAN be done but it begs to be asked WHY do it.Dave

Ok back to the topic... The example of comparing "Chevy" to "Coke" in terms of brand consistency is hilarious, as the OP said "Isn't COke short for Coca-Cola?" I mean if they *really* wanted to be true to the brand they'd go back to the old Chevrolet letters

To debate the whole Coke and Coca-Cola deal, Coca-Cola's original recipe did have cocaine in it at one time.

GM on dont-call-them-Chevy-memo: OopsAutomaker had circulated directives telling employees not to use nicknameBy Jeff Karoubupdated 1:15 p.m. ET, Thurs., June 10, 2010DETROIT - Turns out you can take your 'Chevy to the levee' or any other darn place you please.General Motors Co. on Thursday backed off a "poorly worded" internal memo that asked employees to refer to the brand only as "Chevrolet" in an effort to create consistency.GM says in a statement that it "in no way" is discouraging anybody from using the name Chevy. The internal memo was part of an effort to develop a consistent brand name as it tries to broaden its global presence. There have been many pop culture references to Chevys. Perhaps the best known is in Don McLean's "American Pie." Its signature sing-along chorus begins, "Bye bye, Miss American pie, drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry."Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
