Just to let you all know that tonight was the night that the "04" Cavalier and Sunfire was built. The reason I am telling you this is I build them at the Lordstown Plant in OH.

They had an idea last year on what it was going to be but Lutz sent it back to the drawing board.. One thing I do kown is that it will have the ecotec and a turbo or charger. They should be rolling out in "05" model year as romor has it... The first car they had looked like a d~~n Opel with a Sunfire interior.....So I hope the make this one better....

Aren't they supposed to be completely overhauling the sunfire/cavalier body sometime soon, to beef up it's safety ratings and stuff? I was under the impression it was long overdue for a serious revamp....

I believe not much has changed underneath the skin since '82... I don't think the '95 redesign of the J-body was a complete redesign...Will be interesting to see what GM comes up with for the next generation.

I think that the last J-car will be built sometime in 04. GM is doing work the the plant for the new car new pant shop, new module and marriage.

I really havent kept up with the new car as of lately. I do remember that the first drawing of it looked like an Opel (GM ownes Opel), and as i said in a previouse post. Lutz sent it back to the drawing board. So hopefully for my sake as well as all the other Gm employees Luzt made a good decision to send it back..GM does have a name for it but they havent released it yet. I wish i could tell you, there are alot of us that hate the name. Oh wait i can tell you it was in the paper the other day and the name is "Cobalt" go figure....

It's true that the Cavalier and Sunfire are ending in 04. The '05 Cavalier will be replaced with an entirely new car based off the Delta platform (same as the Saturn Ion... but it won't look like the Ion). The new name is supposedly Cobalt but that isn't confirmed yet by GM. I've heard Gm's plan is to move the Cobalt more upscale from where the Cavalier was, now that they will have a rebadged Daewoo as Chevy's lowest entry car. The Cobalt will also have a supercharged SS version. I haven't heard anything about the Sunfire replacement except that it's also on the Delta platform.

2004 is the last model year for the Cavalier and Sunfire. It will be replaced by a DELTA platform vehicle (Saturn ION) called 'COBALT'. It will be near the same price range as the Cav & Sun, but with more standard features. GM ruined the brand with too many rebates and lease deals (good for us, bad for GM). The Cobalt will appear as a 2005 model. No pictures yet.

Surprising they would nix the Sunfire -- it's a very popular model, especially among teens and yuppies, because it's small, affordable, and (somewhat) versatile -- oh well...such is the way of the industry...BTW -- someone mentioned a rebadged daewoo being the new entry-level Chevy -- probably because GM recently acquired Daewoo -- IMHO, when they acquired them, they shoulda shut them down, cause they're just freaking UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!As for the prototype Cobalt sketch, did it look anything like this:

The rebadged Daewoo will be called the Chevy Aveo. and you're right, it's pretty fugly. But then the Metro wasn't exactly a "gotta have" car either. I think their target price is between 9000-11000 US. Honestly if the Aveo causes them to make the Cobalt BETTER then I'm all for it.

I found an article saying that the cavalier was being replaced with the Cobalt, but no mention of replacing the Sunfire:

It's more than just a name change. When the sunbird changed to sunfire it was still built on the same J-body platform... same as the cavalier. The new cobalt will use a brand new platform that the ion is built on.
