Griding sound in reverse gear

Ok, may be I'm paranoiac but about half of the time, when I put my manual tranny in the reverse gear, I hear a grinding sound. The 1st time I hear it, I thought I haven't pressed the clutch properly but I took little more attention at it a, even the clutch to the floor, I hear this grinding sound. Once in the gear, no more sound, it is only when I pull the stck in the reverse position. Is this normal or there's a trouble with my transmission?

I may be wrong but I think its because there are no synchros for the reverse gear

Hmm, shouldn't grind at all.Sub's right, there's no synchro (i'm pretty sure) in reverse so, you should always be at a full stop and pause for a couple seconds in neutral before putting it in reverse. When you're really careful and do the above, is it ok? If not, you may have a clutch adjustment prob.

Usually, it happend when I'm backing up from my parking spot. So the car is not moving at all and it is in neutral since I parked it up in its spot.

I had the same problem once or twice... but if the car is at a dead stop, I don't know what else would be causing that noise. I haven't gotten it since I figured out that was my problem.

And once it put the tranny on reverse, I can put it back on neutral then reverse again as much as I want without hearing again the noise. May be the car is lightly going ahead while I put it in reverse. I'll try to do it and keep the hand brake on to see what happend.

sometimes I get a little "crunch" when putting it in reverse. You have to push it sort of hard to get it to go all the way into gear. It makes a little noise. I've seen many other manual trannies do the same thing. Just for clarification, I park on flat ground and keep my foot on the brake, so the car isn't moving.

I'll third that - Ben, I have the same problem. I thought it was just due to my inexperience driving manual, but I think I tend to be moving just a little when I shift into reverse. I'm going to try the completely stationary thing, although it's really hard for me to be completely stationary in this car!

I'm seeing the same problem with my 2005 base- kind of a 'crunch' sound with a bit of grinding. I'm ocasionally getting a noticeable shudder from the car when shifting into reverse, even with double-clutching.Over in the MatrixOwner forums at
http://matrixowners.com/forums...verse, nocivic had to have a new transmission, clutch, clutchmaster, and cables installed to take care of what is apparrently a pretty serious issue.Sounds like it's time to take it in to a dealer...
