I did a quick search for a mountain bike topic and came up empty. Who here is into mountain biking? I have been thinking of getting into this sport since November to get back into shape, and have a new fun hobby to enjoy. Today I took the plunge and ordered my first mountain bike, I ended up getting a Gary Fisher Piranha.Let the biking chat begin.

I used to mountain bike quite a bit back before I had kids. Now don't really have the time to get out much anymore unless it's towing a kid trailer around the neighborhood (not quite the same!). It's a shame because I really enjoyed it. I've got a GT Avalanche. I've owned 3 GTs. One was stolen at school, the other trashed in a rollover car accident (was on a roof rack) and my current one is sitting in a shed in need of a spring tune-up.

Fisher makes some good bikes. I haven't been able to do as much as I used to, but still get out occasionally. There are some pics of my bikes in my garage thread.

Wow there are a few more riders then I thought.I wanted to look at a few more bike brands such as Scott, Specilized, GT, I also looked at the Jamis ?? (999 at Price point FS bike), and the Sette Ace online. With it being my first MB I really wanted the knowledge of a LBS in case stuff got harry. That looks like an awesome trail Midnighthunder. where in MI is that. I almost went with the Trek 6500, I went with the GF instead because the longer top tube made it a more comfortable feel for me. But I did like the Deore shifters more on the 6500 because it allowed me to use my thumb and pointer finger to do the shifting instead of just having my thumbs do all the shifting on the Piranha. The only down sides to me starting a new hobby in MB is I don't have any friends that ride .The up side is that I am super Stoked to hit some single track this summer.Aron

For starting almost any bike will do. Jamis makes good bikes to. The main thing you want is a frame that fits you well. Try some different frames the geometry of frames change even within brands. If you like the frame you can always upgrade the components. Disc brakes are awesome and I would highly recommend them. Cannondale also makes good bikes. The only brand you mentioned that I have not heard much about is Scott.
http://www.mtbr.com/ This site has a lot of good reviews if you want to hear from others. I ride 26" but I have heard many good reviews about 29ers. That trail is at the northern most point of michigan in the UP. If you ever get a chance to ride it you should. Edit** Sorry just reread the first post and saw you ordered a bike. If you ever get into lower michigan to ride over the summer I will gladly ride with you. What trails do you live near?

I haven't pulled my from the basement yet this year. But I bought it two years ago. It's a Gary Fisher Tarpon in orange with black wheels. I love it, it's a sick bike. Definitely not for the hardcore MB'er but for a person starting out or who does a mix between light trail and roading it is a great buy. I paid $400 new, gotta get it tuned this spring.

I really like the color on your Tarpon Whelan!I have quite a few trails around me that are in the 1-2 hr driving range, I have Knoch Knolls, Rock Cut State Park, Saw Wee Kee Park, FDR Park, John Muir Trails, and the one I'm really excited to ride Kettle Moraine.Today I just found out that The wife wants to start up in this hobby also, I am now super stoked because I finally have a hobby she wants to do.
