Muffler heat shield

Was just wondering if there would be a prob with not running with the muffler heat shield(the one right under the rear hatch).My wifes 03 vibe with 160,000 kms on it,rusted and fell off today.I can say that I was not very impressed with that issue.I really dont want to replace it,because I will be trading it in on a new Terrian or Equinox in the late summer or early fall.So any thoughts or suggestions?
