Finicky starts / low-end torque on 03 GT

I recently got an 03 GT, 124K miles, for a good price, and I am in love with this car. The only thing about it that really bothers me is the lack of torque below 3k RPMs. Because of this, I find that there is a really small gap in RPMs between where the car stalls, and where the tires chirp. I have finished wearing in a new set of tires hoping that would help, and it did not. It would be nice if I could do something to smooth out the starts. Is there a cheap way to increase low-end torque, or otherwise smooth this out?

Thanks, I am getting better with time, I just wish the squealing was not something I had to worry about. The car came with, lets say, spotty records, so I don't know exactly what has been done. What would you recommend I do?

Change the spark plugs, clean the MAF sensor and throttle body, replace the air filter, change the oil (I recomend a high detergent oil to desludge the engine), change the tranny fluid, run some injector cleaner, test the coolant and flush if necessary. All the regular stuff just to be safe! Especially if you don't know what's been done!
