So I just had my PA db6501's installed with tweeters and 600 watt amp(wow lots-o-rattles). And now Im looking to do something custom for the hatch area sort of like the moon and tunes sub setup. Im leaning towards a 10" or 12" Diamond Hex shallow sub. Has anyone done something similiar and if so how do you like it?

I'm planning on going ahead and using some expanded metal to fabricate a new floor and get rid of the plastic floor, but it's just been too bad of weather to get anything done for a while.As said in there though, it's not near as good as a "proper" enclosure, but far far better than no sub at all.

I did the same as L5k a couple years ago, the differences were I created a false floor for the sub to vent to the cabin a little more efficiently. here are a couple pics from back in the day of the enclosure.Mine was pressure fit to the hole in the tub, glued and sealed with PL400 to create a strong hold, and stapled through the tub.The interior if the tub was also coated in a layer of kitty hair, fiberglass mat and a layer of sound deadener to make it solid.I had all kinds of issues with the tub rattling, I traced most of the rattle to the little round pegs on the bottom of the tub vibrating on the hatch floor and the jack and accessories were bad at vibrating.My solution to all that was to build an enclosure to fit in the spare tire well. I cut rings from MDF to achieve the final product.The final product was before I dyed the Vinyl to match the hatch area. I thought I had a couple more pics but I cant seem to find them.My only complaints with that setup was the fact I couldn't find a woofer that would satisfy my needs. Originally I had a Rockford Fosgate P1 10" but the enclosure was to small and the sub didn't last long, any other 10" sub I had was to big or required a bigger enclosure, so I ordered an Elemental Designs SQ10 10" woofer. I was far from impressed as I didn't have sub stage to keep up with my heavy mid bass. It was the wrong sub for the application. The idea you have about using the side panel I think could work out better, you would yield more FT3 and you could fit a deeper woofer, you would also yield greater output from the sub stage. The thing you would lose would be the stealthy factor that L5K and myself wanted to achieve.Aron

Not custom, but here's some pics of my M&T sub enclosure. I replaced the factory sub with a JBL GTO 804. It has a pretty irregular shape. My best guess is somewhere between .7 and .8 cubic feet. Too big for sealed, just right for ported according to the JBL spec sheet. So I added a 2"x11" port made of PVC.

Thats almost exactly what Im looking for. There is a local audio shop here in town that said they could build me a box that would sit where the moon and tunes box normally is and it would be all nice and flush like that. Im not sure if I should go ported or closed since i listen to rap/rock 50/50.Anywho Ill post some pics after its done. Though it may be a paycheck or 2 till then since the box is 150-200 sub is 300+ and the amp is 350ish.Ill post some pics of the finished product for my mids and highs if anyone is interested.

i wish i had the talent to make a custom box lol i hate giving up half my hatch area for my sub but i like the extra bass with my music

In my opinion sealed sounds much more than adequate and the smaller enclosure is more than worth it.

That is definitely something Id be interested in. Though Im not sure if I would be able to make it. As it stands ill be in ND on the 6th of Marchfor buisness, but hopefully itll get rescheduled. As far as ported vs. sealed goes, which ever takes up the smallest area for the sub Im gettin works for me. I have a 5 year old as well that I plan on starting in sports some time soon, so ill definitely need room for that stuff.

How good does that JBL sound?

I'm very happy with it. It sounds good with any kind of music I've thrown at it, which is basically everything but country. It did well in a couple of different sealed boxes, but is even better ported. It doesn't need a lot of power to run it, either. Mine is getting about 160 watts rms, and easily keeps up with the front speakers, running on 60 watts rms to each mid and tweeter.

If anyone builds a custom box to go in place of the factory sub please post pix. I would like to replace my factory sub with an 8in sub.

@papacueball - Can you give more detail on how you did the setup with the JBL in the M&T enclosure? Its an 8" sub, but if I'm correct the stock sub is only 6.5", so I'm assuming you had to enlarge the hole? More details on how you did the pvc vent would be great too!Also, did you install a new amp for it? If so what model did you use? If not did you have to make any special provisions wiring wise?As you can tell I'm kind of a noob, so sorry if I'm being high maintenance with this question. I'm just in the process of exploring my options for my first install and want to learn as much as possible to make the best decision.Thanks!

The factory sub in the 09 is an 8''. I just had to make a 3/4'' spacer because the JBL is a little deeper. I have used a couple different amps so far. First was a JBL CS 60.2 bridged at 4 ohms. Now it's on the sub channel of an Audison SRX5. I used all new wire for the amps and speakers. As for the port, I was advised by the guy that I bought the sub from to use a .7-.8 cubic foot box with a 2'' port, 11-13'' long. I bought a two foot length of pipe and two 90's (one is threaded on one end) and a threaded coupler. I cut off part of the coupler to make a kind of shim, so that I could get a good seal against the inside of the enclosure. Hey, where did you hide your amp for the JBL sub? This is a great and practical application for those of us that aren't looking for "window opening" subwoofer performance. I just want the sub to fill in the bottom. Congratulations on a great use of existing resources. I love this thing.

The passenger seat has a lot of room underneath, once you take out the factory amp. I never got any pics, though. You can also fit a smaller amp under the driver seat, if you're willing to modify to bracket for the yaw sensor. Pics can be found here: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=41183
