Well I burnt up my sub. Thinking probably one of the VC's. It definitely stunk and smoke was rolling out of it. It was a MTX TR4512-44 I'm running a MTX 421D amp as well. Here are the replacements I am looking at:Alpine SWS-1243D Type SJBL GTO1214DKicker 10CVR124 CompVRBoston Acoustics G312-44MTX TR5512-44Alpine SWR-1242D Type-RBoston Acoustics G212-44JBL P1224 Power SeriesI know there are quite a few listed, but hopefully someone will have experience with one of them and have some input. I'm kinda leary about going MTX again since the last one blew up within 6 months, I think. I will be looking for these on ebay as well instead of getting them through Crutchfield.BTW, the box I'm using is ported with a new internal volume of 2 cubic foot.

my sub of choice is Price Range haha, that's the main reason why I only selected those. I'm probably looking for more quality than loudness, i think. I mainly listen to metal (and other hard rock) then techno, then the occasional rap.

Look into RE Audio. Also get on realmofexcursion.com and watch the videos and read the forums.

Of the ones posted I would say the Type-R or the JBL power series. Both have been proven to be great performers and take abuse well. Not listed I would suggest Digital Designs.
http://www.ddaudio.com/ I have used these since my SPL days (1999-20020 and have never had an issue(8 rockford fosgate BD-1500s on a 9918, yes 12,000 watts on a single sub)I turned a buddy onto DD audio when he opened an audio business in 2004 since then he has only sent one woofer in for repair. The woofer that failed was a 1008 and failed because of the glue that attached the spider to the basket was bad.Aron

I somehow stumbled on Audioque, then Digital Designs. I'm thinking about the DD1512. Now I just need to contact them to determine whether pricing and then see if shipping will be cheaper than driving over to IL to one of their dealers.

It's likely WHY you cooked your other sub in the first place... just not ENOUGH power... 4-500w is NOT a lot these days...

the 421D is a monoblock rated at 300w for a 2 ohm load with a peak of 420w. Is that still not enough? I could understand a 4x500 and only getting 125 to the sub. Do I need to get another amp?

In time I would do as Sublimewind stated and get another amp. To go a little further into his thinking of the reason your sub toasted. when the sub plays they need power to reproduce the low frequencies, and your amp can only produce so much power. What happens over time is the user gets accustomed to the loudness and wants more so they generally turn up the gain to yield the desired loudness. now the amp is no longer level matched to the radio and when you crank it up the amplifier will start to clip, because you are asking it to give power that is unable to produce. When the amp starts to clip it will start to heat up the voice coil on the woofer because the signal is now a dirty signal, this will lead to a point of destruction (friction makes heat then smoke). When you do buy a new amp in the future look into the Digital Designs M1b, solid sub amp with some good power for not much money. For some reason I was thinking the 421d put out 400 watts RMS, guess I was thinking something else.

To follow AudioVibe.. look at it this way... If you have an amp that is underpowered, you will ALWAYS be near it's output limit.. (the amp doesn't output at 100% all the time, not even close) If you have an amp that is OVERPOWERED, it will always be idling along till you REALLY need the power, then you have it on tap... If you are already at the upper limit, there is nowhere to go when the demand is there... I've run subs rated for 125wrms with 250wrms without issue.. in fact, the subs performed INCREDIBLY for being the cheapest in the JL line at the time (12w0)The only problem I had was the voice coil seperated from the cone on one, after 3yrs of BEATING THE CRAP OUT OF THEM... lol... mechanical failure, not electrical.. lol..
