Toyota Pedal was a KNOWN problem

Oops! Based on my readings this morning on the train, the WSJ (Wall Street Journal) stated taht when Toyota was building the new Tundra in Texas back in 2006 for the 07 model year they were aware of a type of plastic used in the pedals that was prone to sticking, especially when the heater was on in the car, condensation could happen and stick the plastic together. Even with a different manufacturer of the supply using a different type of plastic it was not avoided. Since they have been using a new kind of material but again this was something that was known way back. It took deaths and the NHTSA pushing Toyota to admit and fix it.Makes me glad I have the old style 05 Matrix with cable throttle.

yeah I still to this day wonder how people are putting so much trust into electric throttle and steering. Well and the process it takes to make them, its waaay to easy to mess it up as obviously shown.

I have read that there have been no serious injuries or deaths reported attributable to the "sticking" pedal assembly - the deaths had to do with the floor mat issue.

Do you suppose LaHood used to work at Midas? Those "techs" used to try to scare people - saying a certain repair was needed. One would tell you about the $375 worth of work needed on the front end/suspension, and another would remark "I'd park this car." ----------------------- On Wednesday February 3, 2010, 11:21 amWASHINGTON (AP) -- Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is telling owners of recalled Toyotas to stop driving the vehicles and get them fixed.LaHood's warning came Wednesday in testimony before a House Appropriations subcommittee on transportation. LaHood says his advice to owners is to "stop driving it. Take it to a Toyota dealer because they believe they have a fix for it."Toyota's most recent recall in the United States affects 2.3 million vehicles with the potential for sticking gas pedals.LaHood told reporters earlier in the day that Toyota owners should contact their dealer immediately and "exercise caution until repairs can be made."

Last night my wife said to me "remember when I told you about the one time I had an acceleration problem." "Yes dear, I remember, but that was when we had the '03."

If true that it was known, that sound you hear is coming from trial lawyers licking their chops.

One day we'll look back and laugh at all of the old technology we used to drive and swear it was the best ever...even though cars will be safer, more reliable, and more efficient in the future....lol.(typing on my computer, that years ago, I thought was a big waste of time and money.....)

AWD's still had the cable. The other 05's were DBW.

I think there were a tiny number of early 05 matrix/vibes that had drive by cable... but yeah the awd was cable like panic said.

And?............What about this surprises you?Are you old enough to remember the Ford Pinto and the gas tank that explodes upon impact?A memo surfaced amid all of the fuss over this issue that stated Ford knew about it, they also knew it would take a hundred million dollars or so (I forget the numbers exactly) to fix all of the cars on the road. They projected it would take about Fifty Million dollars to settle related law suits, guess which path they chose?Dave

He should be saying to drive them to a GM dealership. The Government really needs the cash.

My VW Karmann Ghia has DBW. A long long wire from the gas pedal to the carb. They snap on occasion but instead of full throttle you haven't any throttle. I prefer this type of malfunction!But....my 07 Vibe also has DBW.

Not that I'm defending Toyota (I truly hope this latest fiasco brings them down a peg or two) but GM isn't exactly the poster child for innocence either. Look how many years GM built trucks having the fuel tank outside the frame rail ('73-'87.) Someone somewhere had to have known that only having a thin layer of sheet metal on the bed separating the fuel tank from certain doom was a pretty stupid idea. And the Corvair thing which came before that.

Now they are in up to it with their brake pedals..when will it end for such arrogance!

Seems like the US Government is putting the hurt on Toyota; I wonder what the outcome will be with Us Car Sales considering the Government owns stake in GM / Chrysler.

We'll see if they're really being mean to Toyota if GM isn't forced to recall some 900,000 Cobalts because the electric power steering doesn't work.

Maybe the government is just returning the favor to Japan...remember the whole mad cow disease / banning of U.S. beef in Japan? What goes around, comes around. Beside, could it be, that the government is actually looking out for an American business and its American employees?

You know, I've just gotta laugh at the speculation that the Gov't is "picking" on Toyota. Why would they?!?!? There isn't any logical reasoning why. The job of the Transportation and Safety department is to make sure manufacturers fix known problems. Right now, Toyota has made a couple of consecutive mistakes, it's Karma, their number has come up, whatever you want to call it.Intermittent problems are tough to solve. It takes time and luck to be able to recreate what happened where it can be observed and a fix designed. With the Prius, there is just too much electronics driving our cars today, we the human are slowly being removed from the drivers seat and being replaced with GPS and computers. It is inevitable that electrical failures will happen and when they do, it often isn't going to be pretty.Be it GM, Ford, Nissan, MB, whoever, the failures ARE going to occur. Just hope that the failure is NOT your car.Dave
