i dont really know how to explain it other than the fact that when i step on the gas when accelerating it sounds like a diesel car. it sounds like its coming from the engine. i just got my cat replaced but i didnt notice the noise until a day after i got the car back.03 base w/ 133k miles

Wow, it could be so many things. I would have a mechanic look at it.

If you are at 40mph give or take 1-2mph the automatics hate that speed. At least in my AWD. The car gets rumbly and groans like it doesn't want to go. Mostly because it is a 4spd. and the engine RPM is so low and it is not in downshift for accel mode yet so it takes a second to catch up.Not sure if this helps but it's what I've come to get used too. This car needed a 5spd bad, especially in the AWD. Which is why I'm shocked they didn't put one in for the 2009 model.

Maybe the folks who replaced the cat left you with a small exhaust leak or you've got a weak motor mount that lets the engine lift up a bit under throttle, gapping the donut washer at the exhaust manifold. but since the exhaust was worked on the day before you first noticed the noise, I'd suspect soimething with the exhaust.
