the newest member of our family

So this Christmas, we decided to adopt a dog from our local Humane Society. Some of you may remember our previous dog, a lovable pit bull named Juno, that we brought home last year. Fantastic dog, but a bit too energetic for our little abode and so she moved to a friend's house with a much bigger yard.My wife found this l'il girl on petfinder. She was picked up as a stray but was definitely someone's pet. The shelter advertised her as "found" for a week and then put her up for adoption. We scooped her up, no way to find her original home so we figured the best we could do is give her a loving new one. She's some sort of border collie/spaniel mix, extremely mellow and loving, house trained, leash trained and she makes a great audience for our virtuoso daughter . Her name, by the way, is Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. ..

I'm not sure its necessary, as she barely wants to go outside. Total homebody. I'm wondering if she wasn't abandoned by her previous ow, one of those "the economy is bad so the dog has to go" sort of situations.Poor girl's got a bit of kennel cough from her stay at the shelter, and she's not eating much. Anyone have any good tips on enticing a dog to eat? I don't think she can smell very well.

Was she checked over by the shelter? Do you know the health status and age?

May want to take her to your vet for a quick check-up and see if the age corresponds, just to be safe if you are worried about her not eating as it will contribute to weight loss. Unless she is just not big on the type of nutrients being provided; may want to try different foods, in small amounts of course, and see which one she likes better?

don't worry about the not eating. New place, just give it time. Good treats, carrots, greenbeans. Try to stay away from the store bought treats. In moderation is ok but because she is new everyone will want to give her a treat.Your first place to go is to your vet to get a check up. This is #1. This will give the vet a base line for the future. Even if she don't want to go out, just think some how the dog got to the pound. So getting a chip put in the dog will insure that the dog, if ever lost again, will be returned to you.Shouldn't cost too much about 30bucks or so. here is a video of the home again infohttp://public.homeagain.com/ho....html

I think My vet charged 35 bucks. Worth 35,000 if she ever gets lost. Especially to that little curly haired piano player.

She is adorable! I agree with microchipping her...any dog can run away even if they don't seem like they ever would. Our Cocoa is microchipped and it's great for her because collars irritate her skin on her neck so she can't wear them regularly. So this way we know there is another way to identify her if she ever gets lost.

Thanks all, for the kind words and advice Happy to say that she is doing much, much better. Snotty nose cleared up, appetite and energy came roaring back and all is well. I'm surprised nobody's batted an eye about her name. Bri's family thinks its a little odd. A cookie to anyone who can tell me what movie featured a dog named Sammy Davis Jr. Jr
