I think my cat. converter needs to be replaced. Anyone know of a mechanic (non-dealer) in the Detroit or Lansing areas that can do it? Should I buy the converter on-line and have someone do it or have the garage get one and do the whole thing? I heard that replacing it with a used one is illegal, is that correct?

If your car has less than 80,000 miles the catalytic converter is covered under warranty. http://www.epa.gov/obd/questions.htm

Oops forgot to mention that my car has 120,000 miles and is a 2003. So it's not covered under warranty. I took it in to a dealer and they said it was too far past the mileage to get warranty work done.I had one place offer to do it for $700, another for $1000. These prices seem kinda high to me.

Hi OU. Yeah I had already read that thread before. Unfortunately I don't have the skills and tools to put one in myself! I can see myself attempting the job and screwing all up.
