It's for sure a cheap car to own. I had 110,000 miles on mine before I totaled it and all I had to do in change one set of brake pads and one set of tires.

Just curious, what was the top 'cheap' car?My guess as the most economical car would be the Toyota Echo.A bit small for my taste, but Toyota reliability and 40 mpg, AND they sell for only about 4 or 5 thousand.

It's a great little car. Doesn't require a ton of work.

A used Echo at $4500 plus 40mpg over 5 years would certainly be less to operate than a $12000 Versa at 30mpg.

I'm curious why when I did the Comparison it said that the Matrix was $400 less in maintenance over the course of 5 years. How, what, weird, uh? Can anyone explain?

It's probably because GM charges more for service and parts. It also depends on where you live. I moved from NJ to PA and service cost me $40 less in PA (5k done in NJ and 10k in PA). Same work performed.
