The time before last when I took my car too get the oil changed at the dealer I had them put synthetic oil in... Well, around 8000 miles go by and I get it changed again.. I ASSUMED that they would just have it on record that I had purchased synthetic and put it in again.. NOPE.. not what happened.. The mechanic who changed it just happened to be standing in the same room when I ask if I was given synthetic.. since they were going to charge me 60 bucks for it.. and the guy turn around and says, no I just put regular in.. Basically, I want to know if switching back and forth and back and forth will hurt my engine, since next time I will be requesting synthetic AGAIN..

It won't hurt anything but for $60 you could do it yourself with synthetic and still have money to burn!

If I TRIED to change my oil.. I would either..A) Die from my car falling and squashing me..orB) Probably forget to put the plug back in and ruin my engine.. So I think I'll just pay..

At the dealer, you pretty much have to TELL them what and how you want it done. Switching back and forth won't do any short term damage but the long term benifits of using synthetic may suffer a tad. (here comes another oil debate...)

I'd rather risk my life changing my own oil while my car was parked facing downhill on Lombard Street, with the parking brake off, than take my car into a dealer for anything. PLEASE find a real mechanic and start a relationship. Dealerships are there to rip you off or kill you; I haven't figured out which of those two business models they prefer.

I think they prefer to rip you off and do just enough work to get you back in next week. If they kill you, you won't be able so spend all your money on them to half-fix your car.... those bricks are slippery

$60 is insane, even for a synthetic. I pay $20 for dino juice with rotation if need be. For synthetic it would be like $45
