i have a 2004 base vibe 5 speed with 102000 miles on the clock. for some time now when i start it it idles at 2 grand and sometimes goes up and down from 500 to 2 grand. i'm showing no warning lights on the gauge cluster. if anybody has had this problemo let me know. i bought this car knew and it's the only fuel injected car i've ever had with this many miles.

Vacuum leak? Dirty MAF sensor? O2 sensor? Start with the easy and listen for the vacuum leak hiss.

Welcome to genvibe.I think an initial idle of 2K is somewhat typical for these cars when it's cold out.The surging, idle hunting, sounds like a problem some of us have had when it gets cold, near or below freezing. There are a couple of threads about it,
http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id ... ?id=15929I don't know if that's the problem you are having, and if it is, I don't know if anyone has identified as definite cause and solution for it.

A high idle on a cold engine is classic Toyota, and is perfectly normal. As the car warms up it should settle down to its normal idle of around 800 RPM.The problem is going from 2000 down to 500 and back up again is not normal. Usually this manifests itself as an high idle that starts at 2000 and creeps up to around 2500 before the idler catches it and dumps the thing down to 800, then back up. Anyway, if you don't have any check engine lights with this, check the PCV valve. I replaced mine and it cleared this up.
