http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap....html this must be a different GM because the one I work for hasn't produced enough of a profit to pay back loans let alone give back pay raises.

When I worked for the now dismantled Borden, Inc. their compensation policy for the "little people" was said to be to pay the "going rate", which was defined as just enough to keep you from going. That is apparently what GM is doing - the pay was too low to keep their salaried workers from going so they upped it. Even in this economy certain skills are in demand. Unfortunately automobile factory line worker is not one of those in demand skills at the present time.

But that's the way it is. There are job skills where the demand exceeds the supply, and job skills where the supply exceeds the demand. It also helps if the task cannot be done in a geographically distant location. If you were a licensed pharmacist for example (I am one of those - inactive but still licensed). By the way, a Fortune 100 company where I worked for 25 years downsized me at age 53, and prior to that ended the retirement and retiree medical coverage benefits for us non-union employees so I have seen some dark times in my working career as well. Fortunately due to my conservative nature I had no debt at the time and was able to build a second self employment career because of my superior service and expertise in a unique field.
