Consumers who traded in their clunkers for a more fuel-efficient vehicle through thegovernment’s popular rebate program turned most often to the Toyota Corolla, but newfederal data show Honda vehicles were a popular pick as well. The U.S. Department of Transportation on Wednesday released results of the so-called Cashfor Clunkers program, saying 690,114 new cars were sold along with $2.88 billion in rebateapplications submitted through the $3 billion initiative. Just behind the Corolla in popularitywas the Honda Civic, while the Honda Accord came in at eighth, followed by the compact,fuel-efficient Honda Fit.Both Honda and Toyota were the only two automakers to feature more than two modelsamong the 10 most popular buys through Clunkers, which officially ended Tuesday. Hondawas the manufacturer of about 13 percent of all new vehicles purchased with the help of theprogram’s rebates, falling behind Toyota, General Motors and Ford.Honda Motor Co. They really should of limited the CFC to GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

Here's to dumping all of the american vehicles for the foreign vehicles... They should have made it for new american vehicles only..it did virtually nothing for Chrysler, GM or Ford.Auto Insurance companies should be very happy as well!!!Oils companies are probably pissed...but who cares..lol.

Also, Ford is also in a little better shape than GM or Chrysler.

Well all the U.S. workers making Honda, Toyotas etc. deserve some support too!Limiting the program to U.S. made cars might have violated our trade agreements - and a lot of GM, Ford and Chrysler cars are probably not made in the U.S so that would have not been very popular either.

I just thought of a way that CFC could have legally benefited Ford, Chrysler and GM over those "foreign" owned makers. CFC could have limited it to purchases of new vehicles that got less than 20 mpg.

...before you make a decision, follow this logic for a moment:1) the most popular new-vehicle is a Toyota Corolla.2) the Ponitac Vibe (and Toyota Matrix) are based on the Toyota Corolla S-chassis and drive trains.3) GM had NUMMI build the Vibe for them.4) only the Pontiac division sold the Vibe.5) GM has nothing 'equivalent' to the Vibe from any other model-line.6) GM's decision to "drop" the Vibe means they effectively "cut-off" their "association" with the above mentioned "...most popular..." vehicle....kinda sounds like a "...dumb..." decision to me--"drop" the one car they (GM) sell that's closest in the car-buyers mind to the vehicle that they MOST want to buy....granted, the new 2010-2011 Cruze is "supposed" to fill the Cobalt/Vibe niche, but only as a 4-door coupe (rumor of 2-door) and not as a 5-door wagon...and, certainly NOT with 4WD available....how did Forest Gump say it? "...stupid IS as stupid DOES."

I'm glad it is helping companies that are moving jobs INTO the country instead of Ford, GM and Chrysler who have been exporting them.

I'm sure that enough taxes will be paid throughout the lives of these new vehivles to easily pay back the 2.88 billion. Buy American??? Whoever bought #3 on the list (the Camry) got the most "American" vehicle possible. And the fact that "the big 3" only had 1 car in the top ten should serve notice that they are losing the battle in a capitalistic market and should DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! But I guess it's easier to pull the patriotism sting then to actually design something that people can and WANT to buy!I paid a total of around $1500 in taxes on the Vibe, my "patriotic" duty is over!

I don't think so. if your going to spout your bullcrap you better have documentation to back up your claims. the Toyota camry is NOT hardly at all American as a matter of fact the content for camry is 42% american content most domestics are 60 to 80%.

I have seen this claim. They base it on the vehicle deliver counts. Therefore, 42% times the delivery volume gave the biggest number. It all depends on the details GM did well in this program also. GM offers more variety of vehicles, so they did not have just one nameplate that was included. Remember, all the Matrix's are also included in the Corolla count.

To compare the import vs. domestic it is simpler to look at the stats by manufacturer rather than by model.New Vehicles ManufacturersToyota 19.4% General Motors 17.6% Ford 14.4% Honda 13.0% Nissan 8.7% Hyundai 7.2% Chrysler 6.6% Kia 4.3% Subaru 2.5% Mazda 2.4% Volkswagen 2.0% Suzuki 0.6% Mitsubishi 0.5% MINI 0.4% Smart 0.2% Volvo 0.1% All Other GM and Ford did pretty good, Chrysler got spanked by Hyundai! A large number of Toyotas and Hondas are built in America even though they are a Japanese company. You can read the entire results from the Cars.gov site in this pdf.

What part of the new car sale pays taxes to the federal government? Sales tax is a state thing.Quote »I paid a total of around $1500 in taxes on the Vibe, my "patriotic" duty is over! http://www.cars.gov/files/offi...s.pdfSo the "American" Big 3 sold 38.6% of the units in the CFC programThe remaining "unAmerican" manufacturers sold 61.4%.According to the WSrtJ
http://online.wsj.com/mdc/publ....htmlthe big 3 had a total market share of 44.6% 2009 thru in July.Since the focus if the CFC program was improving mileage it is not surprising that the "American" big 3 would not get the same share of clunker trade sales as the "unAmerican" companies.

It gets difficult when you start making comparisons between domestics and imports. Some domestics are built elsewhere and some imports are built here. Not only that but some domestics own all or a piece of some imports and vice versa. If percentage of company ownership was factored in the market share numbers would be different. Check out this graphic, it is outdated but shows some examples of how these manufacturers are co-mingled.

http://www.cars.com/go/advice/...e0709Cars.com's American-Made Index highlights the cars that are built here, have the highest amount of domestic parts — with eligible models having parts-content ratings of 75 percent or higher — and are bought in the largest numbers by Americans. Seems to be a good way of deciding which car is "american"...Quote, originally posted by joatmon »What part of the new car sale pays taxes to the federal government? Sales tax is a state thing.Well I did not know that! With all the taxes that will be paid over the life of the 700000+ new cars that were sold with the clunker discount, I would think it would scrape the lines of $3 billion. Besides, your gov't spent over $700 billion (I believe) on the banks, giving 1/243rd of that for people to save on the purchase of a car is small potatos!
