just came up with this terrible idea, it will ruin my life and possibly bankrupt me but i really want to do it.I tryed towing with my vibe gt and it got wack mileage like barely 20mpg from ny to dc which defeats the point of 4cyl fuel efficient towing my gto would have done better.so i started considering getting a tdi VW jetta/ passat wagon or golf hatch for the torque and mpg, but id give up my toyota reliability aside from the longevity inherent to diesels the rest of the mexican built duetchbag mobile may just fall apartthen it came to me, in England they offer a bunch of diesels for toyota the hottest being the 2.2l 2AD-FHV found in the IS220d, the avensis(sedan platform from which the tC springs) the corolla and corolla hatch variants which are somewhere between a yaris and a matrixthis motor is 177hp 295 lb ft tq stock and a chip (under $500) brings it up to 230hp 358lb ft itll do plenty of towing and around 50mpg i believeany thoughts on difficulties from import to the swap itself i plan to get a full corolla front clip and fuel tank to minimize difficulties w/ swap partsplus ill have a spare 2zz for mr2 swappingengine info:

DO IT!!!Doing the swap is simple nuts, bolts, welding and connecting the electronics(properly). The hard part will be getting the engine & tranny, fuel pump, filters, pcm/ecu, and a wiring harness delivered to your door. Just import the whole car and take it from there... and don't forget the pics!!!!!

Before my Neon was totaled my plan was always to stuff a 2.2 Chrysler/Shelby turbo/intercooled in there when it finally died. Still have the engine now! lol.

Do it if you want to for the experiment, the fun of doing such an extensive mod but even if the new engine ran on tap water it would take a really long time to break even moneywise from fuel usage reduction.Or just sell the GT, take that money and the money you'd spend on the mod, and buy a car you'll be happy with.

sounds interesting. I think doing it would present more problems than would be worth the payoff in the end.

well at least unlike all other mods it has a small chance of paying for itself one day, anyway a decent tdi is gonna cost like 7-8k or more for a nice one.and my vibe was so cheap it was practically free.maybe a grease conversion company, biodiesel or clean energy place would sponcer me so i could fix up the rest of the car

i would be keenly interested in seeing where this goes. Any smog/emissions issues with importing that car/engine?

..what's the difference in engine/transmission weights--Gasoline vs. Diesel?

It would be really cool to see but I don't see the payoff in the end.

Rumors were that's what the 1990 CSX would have had if Dodge didn't quash it at the time

im not sure what the engine weighs compared to a 2ZZ but the diesel and gas versions of the same cars seem to be within 20-50 lbs of each other.i hope theres no issues with the importing, i mean people buy emissions illegal motors from over seas all the time so hopefully its noy a big deal

A better idea would be to just give me the gt. Then go buy a truck.

I'd do some serious asking at your friendly State Emission testing station. In today's world you can't just go willy nilly replacing engines. Your chassis number indicates what you are driving and what the emission must be. You change that, I wonder if you'd even be allowed to register it legally. I imagine there is a process for customization but you might find out before you lay out cash to do this.BTW Diesels stink! Starting at the fuel and running to the exhaust!Dave

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_AD_ ... ..y.htmyou gotta remember that the diesel over there is different than ours. there is no way in hale that you can get 50 mph on our diesel over here. The motor would probably catch the flue over here. The 2zz is has no torque. the end. no wonder you cant tow anything. Put in your spyder and then you will have a poor man's lotus elise. (removed), you could turbo your 2zz. And as we all know, turbos are torque multipliers... for sure. Now , I know , I know, that issss expensive. But, ttt I know a secret abut the 2zz. You can turbo it up to 5 psi without doing anything for fuel management...no lie. I have inside information on this. And, I have driven one like that . After that , it is hard as hale to tune it. , but if you are not greedy you can boost up to 5 psi, no questions asked. if you 2zz the spyder...put a turbo on there , put one on that doesnt spool up until 4k, that way you will be in open loop and you will have no detonation issues and still be abel to boost up to8k rpms and make 18o ft #'s of torque.....without any extra fuel management. I am sorry , I am jaded. I am all about turbos. ....never mind..go find your diesel torque monster from the land of royal weddings.

I like this idea! I want to diesel my Vibe eventually too! Or at least turbo it for MPGs. If it fits, give it a shot. Or rather, if you have the money, give it a shot!
