Here's an interesting letter from TOYOTA (April 2007!) describing "Part 541 - Federal Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Standard" applications to Model Year (MY) 2009 Pontiac Vibe:
http://www.regulations.gov/fdm...e=pdf...now you can see if any 'original' factory parts have been replaced with 'replacement' OEM parts (gotta wonder about the unmarked imported stuff from China, etc.)...wonder if similar documentation exists for earlier models?

So this means if you have an original production part there is a number on one place but a part made just to be a spare part will have the id number in a different location?In googling, I saw a similar PDF from Toyota for a 2003 Camry, so they probably have similar info for earlier model Vibes.

most parts are like that the GM trucks have # stamped on alot of parts in certian areas. they also, during assembly, scan almost every part, which is recorded and held in file for said vehicle for tracking stolen parts.
