Synthetic (Mobil 1) Oil Change at Dealer - very costly

Immke Buick Pontiac GMC - Columbus, OH - they inherited Pontiac-GMC from my dealer; my dealer got a Chevy Franchise from one that closed nearby. Immke sent me a LOF offer $15.95. I asked what it would cost for Mobil 1 - they said $80. According to the '09 Manual the Vibe 1.8L takes 4.4 qt - I assume that an oil change is less as perhaps 10% of the oil does not drain out. 4 qt of Mobil 1 is about $25 retail vs. 4 qts reg oil about $8 retail - a difference of $17. But they want an additional $64 to upgrade to Mobil 1. For now I'll stick with the Dino stuff.

You could always ask if they will use oil you bring in. That way you could buy your own oil and have them do it

Man, if I lived near you, i'd do if for you, make 10-15$ for the job and it would STILL cost you ~1/2 that.. lol...

They want 100 Bucks for the Smart and it only takes 3.5QT. I will do it myself. My vibe is due in about 1,000 mile for a change. I never ran synthetic in it though. I am fearful it will start to leak after 60,000 mile on the Dino oil. Smart came with synthetic.

I still think they screwed up my Toyota Celica a few years ago - cost me $1,700 to replace the engine. They denied responsibility - I could not prove it.

That must be some silly football reference or something... (something I don't follow anyway..lol) I's just saying, doing it yourself, can save a bunch of money, but, considering what's in your signature, you likely can't be doing it... SO, if I DID, live near you, I could help you out, but alas, I don't.... lol...

$80 is ridiculous. I buy Mobil 1 at Costco and do it myself.

Are you insinuating that at my AGE I couldn't change the oil? I'll have you know that even when I was 40 years younger that was not a possibility.I had this intro LOF coupon from the Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealer for $15.99. I made sure to ask that they use the 5W-20. Not a problem - they said they would "eat" the added charge for the 5W-20 but in the future it would cost me $3 extra. I asked why since the price at the store for 5w-20 is the same as any other weight. Well they buy the 10w-30 (5w-30?) in bulk whereas the 5w-20 they have to buy by the quart so it costs them more.I may get my future oil changes done at a Toyota dealer.

10% of the oil doesn't stay in the engine.

DO you mean when you drain it, only 90% drains out - the other 10% stay in the engine? That's what I always figured so a 1.8L with 4.3 Qt capacity only uses 4 qt of oil to change - of course some of that 4 qt stays in the can - how much depends on how patient you are in draining the can.

The post said 10% of the oil doesn't come out, and I just dont think that's correct.

The dealer has 10W-30 in bulk and if you don't specify a different weight, you get 10W-30. I don't trust the dealer and would fully expect them to put in the cheapest oil (10W-30 bulk) even if I specified something different.I have such a distrust that even if I brought in my own oil, I would half expect them to keep it for personal use and still dump in the 10W-30 bulk. How would you know? The cheap bulk oil and 5W-20 Mobil 1 look the same on the dipstick.
