Anyone done a simple Head Unit upgrade on 2009 GT

I am looking to install a pioneer head unit with Blue Tooth and XM in my new 2009 Vibe GT. I already have the head unit and XM tuner that I am removing from my 07. I saw some discussions on here about it but they look pretty involved, like upgrading the entire system. I want to keep the existing speakers just upgrade the deck and keep Onstar and my chimes. My past car was a 2007 Vibe with Monsoon, I was hoping to use the same wiring kits that I used for that car and just add the adapter to use my steering wheel controls. A quick call to Crutchfield said that there are no wiring Kits available and that I would have to cut into the harness to bypass the amp, and I would loose my chimes and stuff.I am very experienced with car stereo installs, just trying to get same basic info to start from. I will post some pics of the process. I probably will not do it for a few months as the XM is free for 3 months, I will use that time to get a good game plan together, and let the weather cool down :-)Look forward to your responses. Thanks guys.

Crutchfield is a bunch of idiots... I bought my harness from them!Metra GMOS-LAN-02 is the harness you need to keep onstar and use the factory amp. I have it running with the Pioneer AVIC F700BT in my VIbe. The harness is a little pricey but its worth it to simplify the install.

I don't know of another mention yet of the proper harness to get around on-star for the 09' You seemed to have found it, so, if you could make us a searchable post, it would be great... Just title it, "09' on-star radio harness" or something... You install would be interesting to see as well... A lot of people here are more and more interested in double DIN HU's ... Thank you, and oh, i'm sorry, Welcome to GenVibe..!!!! I'm Aaron.. Cheers..!!

Crutchfield has always done pretty good by me in the past. I have a GMOS-04 from my 07 vibe, I guess that will not work with my new one... That si too bad, it was pretty expensive. I am kind of liking the new stereo, considering keeping it factory, we will see how long that lasts... Thanks for the reply. And, any pics?

Harsh, dude, i'm sorry... I totally flaked and let my audio get in front of my manners... Welcome to GenVibe..!! I do my best to help out here with the audio section, I have semi-limited knowledge of the Vibe itself, but vast audio knowledge in general.. so I do my best.. I know a few have installed both single and double DIN units in the 09's already.. dash kits are out there, harness's are dambed expensive.. silly on-star crap... I'm not much for factory integration... I find a lot of the factory stuff to be lacking in most departments..

I totally agree. That is why I said we will see how long this lasts. I honestly think that they did a nice job making the stereo look nice, since I have the GT Ihave the Monsoon sub and MP3 deck. I just do nto understand why they can not put a decent amplifier behind these things and allow more control over the signal going to the speakers. My Pioneer DEH with Bl;ue Tooth has neighborhood of 50 watts per channel and sounds awesome. I guess I am wanting to install either my pioneer or a new one if there is no cutting (harness) involved. I am fine with factory speakers, I am not entering any competitions, just driving to work, but I woudl like for the stereo have a good sound quality.

A few questions:1. Anyone else tried the Metra GMOS-LAN-02 and confirm it works for 2009 vibe? If yes, did you have to cut any wires?2. I dont have the Monsoon upgrade for my 09 vibe, just XM and MP3 player. Do I have to worry about amp on my car? Is the power from the factory headunit or is there another amp on my car?thx

I am fine with factory speakers, I am not entering any competitions, just driving to work, but I woudl like for the stereo have a good sound quality. That's easy, the manufacture is doing EVERYTHING it can to save money... period.. They want/need to offer a factory "premium" package, so they get what they can from other manufactures that build OEM equipment and shoot for the bottom of the barrel.. even worse for the basic models.. and it holds true across the board.. Higher end cars, get better OEM gear.. some get things bordering aftermarket.. This is why most times, aftermarket will always be better than factory.. It's also why more manufactures are jumping on the aftermarket bandwagon (TRD/scion for instance) These are good days in the budget aftermarket audio, though... There are some speaker selections out there that REALLY rock, for I've seen the PG's go for as little as 40$ and they get GREAT reviews from REAL people on my audio forums... Cadence audio... They have a factory direct "outlet" store... proven amps, for little money.. and factory direct, so full warrantee.. Subs, well subs are funny, people put SOOOOOO much weight on subs and they produce the smallest frequency range of all the speakers, and do it in a non-directional manner (we stop being able to localize sound at ~100hz)fact is, the enclosure makes the sub, so, some of the cheapest looking subs can really perform quite well.. Many people invest in the "look" of a sub, before they ever dig into how the sub will perform.. I'm personally going to be using 2- 15" subs in my Subie, and it's a full competition build.. They are also used and cost me 200$ for the pair.. lol.. Mind you, touted as one of the best sound quality subs ever built, the way I'll be installing them, they will act more like a pair of 10's but go REALLY LOW... and on very little power, by today's standards.. They don't look like much at all.. They perform though.. Now, i'm not saying anyone has to build a competition system, like I am, not at all... I'm saying doing the research and talking on forums and such, can net you the finer things in life, without paying top dollar for them... Those Phoenix Gold components are a perfect example.. I've read some posts of people replacing there FAR more expensive tweeter with the tweeters from that PG set... 20$ tweeters.. lol..

To thepr0fess0rWhen you used the GMOS-LAN-02, does your Vibe have the Monsoon -speaker package? Is your Vibe a 09?I am going to install the Kenwood DNX5120 in my 09 Vibe GT with Monsoon. It was installed in my 08, but I am finding that it may be difficult to transfer into the 09.

The gmos-lan-02 does work with Onstar and the Monsoon system without cutting any wires. You will, of course, have to connect your new head unit's harness to the Metra's harness. I'm not sure if it will work with the non-amplified system, since you have to use the RCA's on the headunit. BTW, Metra also has a gmos-02 interface. It's NOT the same thing.

This is a great post, mostly because I had the same question. I recently traded in my 05 base Vibe for an 09 GT and I want to put in a Pioneer Premier AVIC-F90BT with out loosing any capabilities. My understanding from this post is that the additional purchase of an GMOS-LAN-02 will allow me to keep all Onstar capabilites & use the existing Monsoon sound, is that correct? Also anyone know how good the reciever kit looks once installed? Anyone have a pic of a double din installed in an 09?

Thanks! I should mention that there was a slight fitment issue with this dash kit. The lower mounts need some shims behind them, most likely. I plan to address this when take it all back apart soon. The gap at the bottom is due to the dash kit sitting too far back into the dash. It's only 1/16" or maybe 3/32'', but it's bugging the crap out of me. I was also thinking about painting the silver trim on the dash and doors semi-gloss black.

You mention painting... I just did some things with Duplicolor Graphite wheels paint... it's great.. I also found this great carbon fiber cloth that is super easy to wrap pats like you are talking about...
