so the past week and a half, i've been doing more driving than usual and i gotta tell you my o4 is still fun to drive! AND the last couple tanks, i've been getting a very nice 33-34 mpg. BUT, all of a sudden, my cruise control will randomly shut off. the first couple times, i thought maybe i hit a bump, or maybe i inadverdently knocked the crusie stalk. but then i started to pay attention. i get to 65mph, and turn the cruise on. it engages, then whenever it feels like it, it disengages, but the indicator on the dash light is still on. at one point, it disengaged, i accelerated, and turned it back on, and then 1 second later, it disengaged again. i just shut it off after that. other than that, drivability has not changed. anyone have an experience with the cruise unit? i'd like to hear from you guys before i have to put it in the hands of the crappy dealer...thanx in advance.

Could be an electrical issue. There could be a wire shorting out.In my brother-in-law's Cherokee, his cruise shuts off if you turn on the left turn signal. It took us a while to figure it out, but there was a wire in the turn signal that shorted out the c/c.

First, check something really dumb and simple.Remove and examine the filament in each of your brake light bulbs: left, right, and CHMSL (center-high-mounted-stop-light). Might be as simple as a broken but 'dangling' filament in one of the brake light bulbs that 'bounces' in and out of contact inside the bulb. When it's in contact, your cruise would work normally. Then you hit a bump, the filament flexes, no contact, cruise control shuts off.The road gets smoother, the filament dangles back into the right place, and voila, it works normally until the next bump.

Also check the cable attached to the throttle. my aftermarket cruise had some issues with the control cable popping off the throttle cable.

kostby, you f-in' rock. so last week, i put a post against the brake pedal and checked the lights in the garage. they both came on and i figured damn. the cruise control prob is gonna get more complicated. BUT i never checked the rear tail lights in general! the other nite, i backed into my parking space and noticed the brakes were on when i pressed the pedal, but there was no taillight lit when the headlights were on!!!! woohoo! checked the bulb, one of the filaments was broken. and the bulb had a black spot near it. popped in a new bulb the next day, and haven't had any problems since.this site rocks. great info, great family! long live the vibe
