2003 Vibe, FWD, 1.8LOur air conditioning is completely dead. We tried recharging it, and that didn't work, so we took it to a friend who runs a mechanic shop, and he said that the unit needs replaced...How do we find out if that's the Compressor or the Condenser that needs replaced?!?! We can't afford to buy one $200 part and find out we actually needed the $350 part! Our check engine light is on, but that's from the oxygen sensor that has been out for a while...if we go get a scan done, will there be a code related to the a/c?Any info is appreciated!

In the mid-sixties I drove though Kansas in a car without air conditioning. Not fun!

What did your friend tell you was bad? I would say it is the compressor, DID YOU CHECK THE SAVAGE YARDS FOR ONE.

I would have to say it's more likely a hole in the condenser... IMHO... It's sitting in front of the radiator, and can easily get binked by a rock.. You should really take it somewhere and have it leak tested... Or, you can buy a leak testing kit and do it yourself... you just charge the system with some refrigerant that has a UV dye in it.. then use a black light to find the leak... It's easy.. but it will also tell you EXACTLY what you need to know..
